Leeds Rhinos Greatest Super League games 90-81

On Sunday 29th March, Leeds Rhinos will host Warrington Wolves at AMT Headingley on a special occasion for the Super League competition. The game will mark 30 years to the day since the first Super League game between Paris and Sheffield, with Leeds and Warrington having met on that inaugural weekend back in 1996.

To mark the occasion, the Rhinos have unveiled a new look heritage shirt and there will be a great retro feel around the gameday and build up. To celebrate the last three decades we are counting down Leeds' top 100 Super League games including play offs, Super 8s and Grand Finals.

Every day we will be revealing another ten games building up to Friday 27th March when the top ten will be announced.

Leeds Rhinos Greatest Games 90-81

90. Celtic Crusaders v Leeds Rhinos 2009

Hat tricks from Brent Webb and Jamie Peacock took Leeds to the top of the table but it was in bizarre circumstances.

The Crusaders were rocked by the deportation of six players in midweek prior to the game and Leeds’ arrival at the ground was delayed until just before kick off due to being stuck in traffic heading to a U2 concert in Cardiff en route to the game at Newport. Leeds got changed on the coach and went straight from a short warm up into the match.

89. London Broncos v Leeds Rhinos, 2013

Leeds Rhinos needed two second half tries from Paul McShane to see off a spirited London side at the Stoop.

It was an emotional occasion for the club as the first game after the death of former Head Coach Graham Murray and both teams and supporters observed a minutes silence before kick off.

The game marked Kevin Sinfield’s 500th career game.

88. Leeds Rhinos v Huddersfield Giants 2009

Kallum Watkins scored a sensational interception try to seal a remarkable come back by the Champions as they beat Huddersfield 20-12 at Headingley.

The Giants led 12-0 deep into the second half and it looked that they may secure their first win at Headingley since 9th September 1959.

However, two tries from Watkins and a great effort by Kylie Leuluai plus a faultless kicking game from Kevin Sinfield sealed the win with both teams without their international players who had been involved in a France v England game 24 hours earlier in Paris.

87. Leeds Rhinos v London Broncos, Magic Weekend 2019

Leeds Rhinos faced huge game at the Dacia Magic Weekend in 2019. Under new coach Richard Agar, Leeds knew they could not afford to slip up against relegation rivals London Broncos.

The Rhinos looked to be in control of the game but Danny Ward’s side refused to throw in the towel and set up a tense finale at Anfield.

86. Huddersfield Giants v Leeds Rhinos 2020

With 12 minutes left of their first game for five months Leeds Rhinos trailed Huddersfield Giants 26-6 and were a man down. Officially an away game played at Headingley, this was the first game back after the global pandemic had shut the sport down and was played behind closed doors.

A frantic quarter of an hour later and Leeds had won 27-26 to go top of Betfred Super League, on points difference, in the most unexpected and dramatic fashion.

85. Leeds Rhinos v Catalans Dragons 2014

A last gasp penalty from Liam Sutcliffe grabbed a dramatic win for Leeds Rhinos against Catalan Dragons at Headingley.

With three minutes to go, Catalans engineered a drop goal for the impressive Escare to put his side 31-30 in front.

The Rhinos were fortunate to get the ball back when Sutcliffe's short kick off did not go ten metres but Jason Baitieri touched the ball and a certain penalty against Leeds was suddenly in their favour. Leeds could find no way through the visitors defence but just as they looked to play out time coming away from their own line they were guilty of obstruction. That gave Sutcliffe the chance to win the game from 30 metres out and the 19 year old showed a cool head to kick the winning goal.

84. Leeds Rhinos v Wigan Warriors 2000

The Rhinos come back from 19-6 down against Wigan at Headingley to record a famous win thanks to two tries from Richie Blackmore and one each from David Barnhill and Francis Cummins.

83. London Broncos v Leeds Rhinos 2001

Leeds kicked off the 2001 Super League season with a high scoring 50-18 win against London Broncos at The Valley.

Dean Lance’s side trailed 18-0 early on but rallied back with 50 unanswered points.

82. Wigan Warriors v Leeds Rhinos 2003

Nothing could separate these two teams in 2003 in a campaign that ultimate ended in disappointment for both clubs. Having drawn 24-24 in May, the two sides met again in August. Wigan led 24-20 with barely a minute remaining before Andrew Dunemann created a move with Keith Senior and put Danny McGuire away. He chipped ahead and collected his own kick before touching down. Sinfield missed the game winning conversion so the points were shared.

81. Sheffield Eagles v Leeds Rhinos 1998

Leeds looked to continue their winning start to the 1998 Super League season with a trip to take on the recent Challenge Cup winners Sheffield Eagles at the Don Valley Stadium.
