Leeds Rhinos Greatest Super League games 100-91

On Sunday 29th March, Leeds Rhinos will host Warrington Wolves at AMT Headingley on a special occasion for the Super League competition. The game will mark 30 years to the day since the first Super League game between Paris and Sheffield, with Leeds and Warrington having met on that inaugural weekend back in 1996.

To mark the occasion, the Rhinos have unveiled a new look heritage shirt and there will be a great retro feel around the gameday and build up. To celebrate the last three decades we are counting down Leeds' top 100 Super League games including play offs, Super 8s and Grand Finals.

Every day we will be revealing another ten games building up to Friday 27th March when the top ten will be announced.

Leeds Rhinos Greatest Games 100-91

100. Leeds v Paris St Germain 1996

Leeds were facing a battle against relegation in the inaugural Super League competition, so much so that Head Coach Dean Bell came out of retirement to play his part to try and save the club from a first ever relegation.

99. Gateshead Thunder v Leeds Rhinos 1999

Graham Murray took his side to the North East for the opening game of the 1999 Super League season. The Thunder were making their Super League debut with a star studded side assembled by Shane Richardson but the big kick off was nearly all off before it started. Torrential rain turned the Gateshead International Stadium pitch into a mud bath but the show had to go on and Leeds came away with a hard earned win.

98. Leeds Rhinos v Sheffield Eagles 1997

This was a real ‘I was there’ moment when the Rhinos Academy captain was given a chance to make his debut by Head Coach Dean Bell.

Teenager Kevin Sinfield pulled on a Rhinos shirt for the first time and although the game ended in defeat, the rest is history.

97. Leeds Rhinos v Leigh Centurions, Super 8s Qualifiers 2016

Brian McDermott’s Champions had endured a painful season that ended with them going from the Treble to the Qualifiers fighting for their Super League lives. The place in the top flight was secured with victory over Leigh at Headingley with a memorable try from hooker James Segeyaro.

96. London Broncos v Leeds Rhinos, 2004

Tony Smith’s side were sweeping all before them in 2004 on their way to the first Championship in 32 years at Old Trafford. However, on a July afternoon in Brentford it was one of their own that nearly knocked the charge off the rails.

All seemed to be going well at Griffin Park until a late fightback and then Liam Botham, who was on loan from the Rhinos to London, kicked a touchline conversion to snatch a draw. Look out for a young Carl Ablett on debut.

95. Bradford Bulls v Leeds Rhinos, Magic Weekend 2011

The Brian McDermott era kick off in Cardiff with the Millennium Magic Weekend to start the season under the roof of the Welsh national stadium.

This high scoring derby was the pick of the games and kick started a season that would see Leeds lift the title again at Old Trafford however they needed a late penalty try to seal the win.

94. St Helens v Leeds Rhinos, 2018

The Champions headed to St Helens in Round Six of the competition having returned from Australia and the World Club Challenge in Melbourne a couple of weeks earlier.

The game proved to be a rare highlight of a disappointing campaign but included two tries from Ash Handley at venue that has become a favourite hunting ground for the winger.

93. Leeds Rhinos v Hull FC, 2008

Leeds Rhinos overcame a major scare to maintain their six point lead at the top of the table to beat Hull FC in 2008.

The Rhinos trailed 18-0 midway through the first half but fought back with a sensational display of attacking rugby to win 38-22 including a wonderful solo effort by Scott Donald.

92. Wigan Warriors v Leeds Rhinos 2003

Leeds produced a comprehensive performance at the JJB Stadium to defeat Wigan Warriors 30-20. Former Warrior Gary Connolly got on the scoresheet for the Rhinos, as well as Mark Calderwood, Danny McGuire, Rob Burrow and Francis Cummins.

91. Hull KR v Leeds Rhinos, 2012

A late drop goal from Kevin Sinfield gave Leeds Rhinos a 25-24 win over Hull KR after trailing 18-6 at the break.
