Rhinos swoop for experienced Bird to bolster squad
Leeds Rhinos are delighted to announce the signing of Australian Jack Bird on a two year contract, strengthening the club’s squad for the new Betfred Super League season.
Bird, a versatile player capable of playing across the centres and halves as well as the back row, brings significant NRL experience to AMT Headingley having made 179 NRL appearances and played for New South Wales in five State of Origin games. His arrival follows the unfortunate season-ending knee injury sustained by Max Simpson, which has provided the Rhinos with the opportunity to bolster their playing group for the year ahead.
Born in Wollongong, Bird emerged through the St George Illawarra junior system before making his NRL debut in 2015 for Cronulla, being named Dally M Rookie of the Year in his first season. He rose to prominence with the Sharks, playing a key role in their 2016 NRL Premiership triumph. Bird later joined the Brisbane Broncos, before moving to St George Illawarra in 2021. After four seasons with the Dragons he moved to Wests Tigers last season, making 17 appearances.
Jack Bird said: “I’m really excited to be joining Leeds Rhinos. It’s a huge club with a proud history and a passionate supporter base. I know a few of the boys; Brodie Croft and Keenan Palasia could not speak more highly of the club and I can’t wait to get stuck in. I am looking forward to being at AMT Headingley on Friday night for the game against York, I have heard so much about how great the atmosphere is and I’m looking forward to experiencing it for myself and then getting stuck into to training over the next couple of weeks.”
Sporting Director Ian Blease added: “Jack is a quality experienced player who will add depth and competition to our squad. With Max Simpson sadly ruled out for the season following his knee injury, it was important for us to act quickly to ensure we remain strong across the backline. Jack’s ability to cover multiple positions and his big-game experience make him an excellent fit for Leeds Rhinos.”
Head Coach Brad Arthur said: “Jack brings toughness, professionalism and a high level of football intelligence. He’s competed at the top level and understands what it takes to prepare and perform week in, week out. We’re confident he’ll add value to our group both on and off the field and help drive standards as we head into the new season.”
At representative level, Bird has featured for New South Wales in State of Origin between 2016 and 2017, underlining his pedigree as a proven performer on the biggest stages of the game. Bird will wear the number 33 squad number and will be available for selection for Leeds Rhinos Round 4 clash with Castleford Tigers at AMT Headingley. He will not travel to Las Vegas next week.
Leeds Rhinos take on York Knights at AMT Headingley this Friday, kick off 8pm with new signing Jack Bird set to introduced to the crowd at half time. Book your ticket now at tickets.therhinos.co.uk
