Edgell bright about future despite set back

Young Leeds Rhinos full back Alfie Edgell is looking forward to the future after agreeing a contract extension that will keep him at AMT Headingley until at least the end of the 2027 Betfred Super League season.

The news that the Rhinos have triggered the option in his contract to extend his contract has come as a boost for the 21-year-old after he suffered a thigh injury that will keep him on the sidelines for the first part of next season.

A product of the Rhinos’ academy and a lifelong supporter of the club, Edgell’s extension underlines Leeds’ commitment to its emerging young talent and provides long-term stability as the club continues to build for the future.

The new deal comes following an unfortunate setback for Edgell, who suffered a thigh injury during the Wetherby Whaler Festive Challenge win on Boxing Day. The injury is expected to rule him out for 14 to 16 weeks, with the young back now focused on his rehabilitation programme.

Speaking after agreeing the extension, Edgell said the deal gives him confidence moving forward despite the injury. “It just gives you that bit of stability moving forwards,” he said. “There’s no place I’d rather be than here, so I’m really, really happy. Obviously, I suffered the injury on Boxing Day and that’s frustrating, especially when I was really enjoying pre-season and being around the lads. Frustratingly, until last year I had never had any injuries but it has been a tough 12 months however I will just make sure that I come back stronger from this set back.”

Sporting Director Ian Blease welcomed the extension, saying, “Alfie is Leeds through and through and that really matters to us. He’s a committed young player who has shown great resilience whenever he’s faced challenges. This contract extension reflects our belief in Alfie and our confidence that he’ll come through his rehab and continue to grow as a player at this club.”

Head Coach Brad Arthur added, “Alfie was looking sharp in pre-season and had taken a lot out of the last few months. It’s unfortunate that he picked up the injury on Boxing Day but I have no doubt he will do everything asked of him to get back on the field as soon as possible.”
