Super League Round One: The History
Round one of the 2026 Betfred Super League will see Leeds Rhinos make the trip to the Progress with Unity Stadium to take on Leigh Leopards on Friday 13th February, kick off 8pm
This year will be the first official meeting between the Rhinos and Leopards in the opening game of a Super League season as Adrian Lam's side becomes the 14th different opposition a Leeds side has faced since 1996.
Here's some of the history about how Leeds have previously opened their league seasons:
FORM & FACTS
Leeds Wins: 20
Leeds Losses: 10
Leeds wins at AMT Headingley: 11
Leeds wins away: 9
Biggest Leeds win: 2004 vs London (58-14)
Clubs faced: Warrington (7 matches), Wakefield (4 matches), London, Huddersfield, Hull KR (3 matches), Hull FC, Salford (2 matches), Oldham, Gateshead, Widnes, Castleford, Bradford, St Helens (1 match)
Longest unbeaten run in round one: Nine wins (2001-2009)
- The last time Leeds played a new team in round one was St Helens at the start of the 2017 season. That result saw Joel Moon score Leeds' sole try in a 6-4 result.
- Leeds have been drawn against the same team in round one four times before in consecutive seasons. London were the first time in the 2001 and 2002 seasons, before Hull KR lost out in the 2014 and 2015 openers. Warrington were the last team to play Leeds in round one as the Wolves faced Leeds in 2016 and 2017, as well as 2022 and 2023.
- Tom Briscoe had one of the most memorable debuts for Leeds back in 2014 against Hull KR as he scored a hat trick in his first Rhinos game. A bonus for the long-serving Hull FC player was doing it against his derby rivals.
- Brian McDermott had one of the best records in round one as Leeds head coach, losing only twice between the 2011 and 2018 seasons. Tony Smith (2004-2007) leads the list of Leeds coaches to win all of their round one matches, as well as Daryl Powell (2002-2003) and Graham Murray (1998-1999).
