Thousands raised for two Leeds Charities from annual Big Sleep

The kindness and generosity of the Leeds community was on show at the annual Leeds Big Sleep in October, as hundreds of people slept out at AMT Headingley Stadium to raise money for vulnerable people in the city.

The fundraisers swapped the comfort of their own homes for one night to sleep on the terraces at the home of Leeds Rhinos in support of homeless charity St George’s Crypt and Leeds Rhinos Foundation.  Both charities are celebrating significant anniversaries this year, St George’s Crypt are commemorating 95 years of offering care, compassion and hope to the homeless and vulnerable, while Leeds Rhinos Foundation are marking 20 years of using the power of sport to make positive changes for people’s lives.

Over 180 participants took part in the event and raised an incredible £30k, which will help the two charities continue to their work with some of the city’s most vulnerable.

On the night there was a chance for the volunteers to hear from each charity to find out more about the projects that the money they raised would support.  There was also some musical entertainment and the popular Rock ‘n’ Roll Bingo for the group to enjoy before heading down to the terraces for the night

Gareth Cook, Head of Community at Leeds Rhinos Foundation said: “We were once again overwhelmed by the support of the ninth Leeds Big Sleep in partnership with St Georges Crypt.

“The evening raised a significant amount of money that will have a huge impact on the projects both organisations deliver within the city. Around 180 legends braved the cold at the Stadium and hopefully managed to get a little bit of sleep!

“Next year will marks the tenth year of the event and we hope to make it our biggest yet, with a target of 500 sleepers.”
