Kangaroos mark return to AMT Headingley
AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium has a long history of hosting touring Australia sides dating back to the early 1900s, and this weekend's Ashes finale is the latest chapter in the Green and Golds running out at the stadium.
Here's a quick history of Leeds and Kangaroos:
Australia sides have taken to the field at Headingley 35 times since 1908, when they first faced a Leeds side as part of the 1908/09 tour and won 14-10 in a close final score. Four years later, they bounced back to run out 8-6 over Leeds as part of the 1911/12 tour before facing their first international opponent in Great Britain in 1921. The home nation won 6-5 to kickstart a run of ten victories in Leeds against Australia up until 1970.
Aside from being unable to defeat the GB Lions, travelling Australia sides did find wins over Leeds and New Zealand on their visits to the city before and after the Second World War. The 1921, 1933, 1948, 1952, 1956 and 1959 tours saw the Kangroos defeat Leeds sides as part of the tour, whilst the home club got their revenge in 1929, 1937 and 1956 in standout wins for the team in blue and amber. Against international opposition, the Kangaroos' sole win came against New Zealand in the 1960 World Cup on the way to losing out to Great Britain in the final.
1970 proved to be the turning point in Australia's fortunes in Leeds as a 12-7 win over Great Britain in the World Cup Final sparked a 52-year unbeaten spell at Headingley. On their way to winning ten Ashes series and four World Cups between 1970 and 1994, the Kangaroos secured three Ashes wins over Great Britain in 1973, 1978 and 1982 as they retained the trophy 12 years in a row.
The 1975 England side also suffered defeat to the Kangaross in a 25-0 defeat, whilst Leeds sides also found no way passed a dominant era for the Australians. The closest a home crowd got to seeing a Leeds win was in 1990 when tries from John Gallagher and Paul Dixon scored tries in a 22-10 loss to the Aussies.
Headingley had to wait 19 years to host an Australia side again - the Jilaroos clashed with the Kiwi Ferns in the Women's World Cup Final in 2013 - and the stadium had to wait a further nine years to see the Men's side in action again. The run was broken in 2022 when the delayed World Cup (due to the Covid-19 pandemic) saw the Kangaroos take on Fiji in the opening game of the tournament. Two tries from Josh Addo-Carr led Mal Meninga's side to a 42-8 result that day, continuing a current 11-game winning run for the Green and Golds at the stadium since 1970.
