2025 Season Review: January-February

As we prepare to wave goodbye to 2025 and welcome in 2026, we're running back all the big events that took place around the club over the last twelve months.

On the run up to the New Year, here's a look back at the events of January and February:

January

Entering the new year, Leeds continued their preparations for the upcoming Super League season by facing off against Wigan Warriors. Whilst the match proved to be the final test before a round one clash with Wakefield Trinity, it was an occasion to celebrate long-serving winger Ash Handley who celebrated his testimonial year with a try against the reigning quadruple champions. Cameron Smith, Harry Newman and Ryan Hall added tries in the 22-4 triumph, but the occasion was overshadowed by an injury to star recruit Maika Sivo who was subsequently ruled out for the season.

Before the start of the season, Mikolaj Oledzki secured his long-term future at the club as the prop agreed a three year deal to keep him at his hometown club. Recruitment work for Leeds Rhinos Women also brought in utility Tally Bryer from Featherstone Rovers as Lois Forsell added an exciting young talent to her squad for the upcoming campaign.

February

Kicking off the 2025 campaign in the Betfred Challenge Cup, Leeds encountered a first in the competition's history as they were drawn against National Conference League South side Wests Warriors as part of the Cup's format revamp. Played at AMT Headingley, the Rhinos ran out comfortable 92-0 winners in front of a 1,320 crowd thanks to tries from ten different players, including hat tricks from Ryan Hall and Sam Lisone. Jake Connor - one of three debutants alongside Cooper Jenkins and Keenan Palasia - marked his first game in blue and amber with a try and 14 goals.

The Betfred Super League season kicked off a week later, but the Rhinos were handed a tough start as they lost out to newly-promoted Wakefield Trinity in an attritional affair under the Headingley lights. They made sure to bounce back in the first of three fixtures against Salford Red Devils, a week after the Red Devils had fielded a Reserves side under a sustainability cap. Unfazed by a full strength Salford outfit, two tries from winger Riley Lumb led a 32-6 win on the road for Leeds, whilst Morgan Gannon, Ash Handley, James Bentley and Ryan Hall also opened their accounts for the league campaign.

February also saw the club announce the arrival of Ethan Clark-Wood to fill the place of injured Maika Sivo on a short term contract. The outside back arrived in the UK but had to wait until the spring to make his club debut.
