2025 Season Review: March-April
As we prepare to wave goodbye to 2025 and welcome in 2026, we're running back all the big events that took place around the club over the last twelve months.
On the run up to the New Year, here's a look back at the events of March and April:
MARCH
Heading into March, Brad Arthur's Rhinos side had mixed results as they found their feet in the opening games of the Super League campaign.
A high scoring clash against Danny McGuire's Castleford Tigers saw Leeds come out on the right side of a 38-24 result; Keenan Palasia, Jake Connor and Jack Sinfield opening their accounts to comfortably see off their Yorkshire counterparts. Having struggled to score points in their last two away trips to Catalans Dragons, the Rhinos' rotten run continued in round four as they fell to a 14-0 defeat, before St Helens ended the club's Challenge Cup run in the fourth round with a 22-14 final score.
In need of a win to build momentum, a home clash against the champions Wigan Warriors provided the perfect opportunity as Ryan Hall (in his 500th career appearance) produced an outstanding try assist for Sinfield to score the match winning try in what proved to be a tense 12-10 victory.
Round seven's meeting with Warrington also went down to the wire, but Sam Burgess' Wolves side managed to come out with a 16-14 result to end the month.
March proved to be a sad month as the club mourned the losses of long-time talent scout Bob Pickles and former head coach Doug Laughton. Former Rhino Francis Cummins paid tribute to Laughton on a special edition of The Leeds Rhinos Podcast.
Changes were also announced around the club, including two new signings for the Women's team as Australian Mel Howard and England international Lacey Owen committed to the club. Leadership changes were also announced by the club's board as Gary Hetherington confirmed his departure at the end of the season to be part of the London Broncos project. Jamie Jones-Buchanan MBE was announced as Hetherington's successor, plus new roles were confirmed for Rob Oates as Managing Director, Sue Ward as Chief Operating Officer, and Allie Hulme as Vice Chairman.
APRIL
Two wins in three games during April strengthened the Rhinos position in the Super League table as Brad Arthur's side began to hit form.
James McDonnell ran riot at the Salford Community Stadium as the back rower scored four tries in a 28-0 win over Salford to get Leeds back to winning ways, plus the signing of former Rhinos player Kallum Watkins from the Red Devils saw the former Leeds captain score on his Headingley return as the Rhinos defeated Huddersfield 28-6 on Good Friday.
The Rhinos also came close to beating high-flying Hull KR to close out the month, but let a 14-6 lead slip as Willie Peters' side scored three tries in the final 15 minutes to take home the league points.
April also marked the start of the Women's Rugby League season as the Rhinos opened their Challenge Cup campaign in style.
Forsell's side progressed through the group stages with ease as they beat Leigh 46-6 and Sheffield 104-0 in what was a record away win in any competition for a Leeds side. Drawn in the quarter finals against Huddersfield Giants, the Rhinos were victorious again as tries from Ebony Stead, Sophie Nuttall, Mel Howard, Shannon Brown, Lucy Murray, Ruby Bruce, Olivia Whitehead and Grace Short confirmed the club's place in the semi finals.
