Leeds Rhinos medical update

Leeds Rhinos head coach Brad Arthur has provided an update on the squads injury situation ahead of Thursday's crucial Betfred Super League clash against Wakefield Trinity.

Co-captain Cameron Smith is battling back tightness and will be assessed after today’s training session before a final decision is made on his availability.

"He's had some back tightness for a few weeks now and has been managing it the best he can," Arthur said. "We just need to make sure he can do his job properly. We're waiting to see how he pulls up after training today—Ben Littlewood is on standby."

Australian back Ethan Clark-Wood suffered a shoulder injury in training last week, with fears that his season could be over. The club is awaiting further medical assessment to determine whether he requires surgery or extensive rehab.

"It's disappointing for him," Arthur admitted. "He moved here from the other side of the world, and his opportunities have been limited. The game can be cruel, but it’s part of growing as a player. I'm not sure at this stage what that will mean about his future, I think there are regulations around minimum appearances he has played but Ian Blease is dealing with that with Ethan."

Prop Mikolaj Oledzki, who suffered a fractured cheekbone and eye socket against St Helens recently, remains sidelined with significant swelling but is in good spirits.

"Mik came in today to see the boys, he's still got swelling, but we're hopeful he'll recover quickly," Arthur said. "The timeline for his return hasn’t changed and the operation he had last Friday went well."

There is better news elsewhere, with Morgan Gannon nearing a return after the upcoming break, potentially in time for the Leigh fixture. Jack Sinfield (ankle) is back in contention this week, while Tom Holroyd and Oledzki are expected back shortly after the Leigh game.

Youngsters Max Simpson and Ned McCormack have resumed full training and would be available if a reserves match were scheduled this weekend.

"They’ve worked hard and been patient," Arthur said. "It’d be great for them to get some game time—not just for the team’s depth, but for their own development."

Arthur also highlighted the resilience of Ben Littlewood (hamstring) and Ned McCormack, who has fought back from multiple setbacks.

"Ned’s been really diligent—it’s easy to give up after bad news, but he hasn’t," Arthur said. "If he gets a couple of reserve games, he could feature later in the year. Ben’s another who’s stayed patient—it’s good to see these young lads get their chance."
