Net Zero Game: Leeds Rhinos and Ecotricity partnership delivering real benefits

Did you know that all the energy that powers AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium comes from renewable energy sources?

Whether it is our own PV panels capturing the power of the sun on the top of the South Stand roof or through our groundbreaking partnership with Ecotricity, the world's first green energy company, Leeds Rhinos are taking the steps towards integrating sustainability into the operations of the club.

Ecotricity is the official energy supplier of Leeds Rhinos, aligning Ecotricity's mission to eliminate fossil fuels with the Rhinos’ commitment to net zero.

This partnership marks the latest green initiative Leeds Rhinos have embarked on. The Leeds based club has already implemented eco-friendly measures like EV charging points at their AMT Headingley Stadium, as well as engaging with the local community on sustainability issues. The club has also set a target to be net zero in their Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and is on track to have a 37% reduction in their Scope 3 emissions by 2050.

Key features of the partnership include:

1.     Enhanced Sustainability: Collaboration on initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and promote green practices, including hosting a sustainability workshop at AMT Headingley Stadium.

2.     Fan Engagement: Matchday activations and digital campaigns will encourage fans to adopt eco-friendly practices, amplifying Ecotricity’s reach to Leeds Rhinos supporters and the wider rugby league community. That includes this Friday's Net Zero Game against Hull KR when Ecotricity will be at the game conducting a fan travel survey which, if you complete it, will put you into the draw to win £150 worth of vouchers to spend in the Rhinos club store.

3.     Brand Visibility: Ecotricity’s branding features prominently on LED boards, matchday programmes, and digital platforms during men’s home matches.

4.     Community Impact: Joint efforts to educate and involve local communities in sustainability initiatives, leveraging the Rhinos’ extensive community programs that touch the lives of 96,000 people annually.

The partnership is testament to how collaboration between businesses and sports can create meaningful change as part of the UK’s wider journey to net zero. With shared goals of decarbonisation and community education, Ecotricity and Leeds Rhinos are setting the stage for a greener, more inclusive future.

Ecotricity's electricity is 100% green – made from the sun and the wind. They generate about 15% of it themselves and the rest is certified green energy they buy from other green generators or via the wholesale market. What really makes Ecotricity different from other energy companies, including the ‘green’ ones, is that they turn their customers’ bills into new sources of green energy. They are building new wind and sun parks across the country, so are increasing the amount of renewables in Britain rather than just trading what already exists.  Plus they are always researching and developing newer, bigger and more efficient ways of generating green electricity. Their goal is to completely replace electricity made by burning fossil fuels.
