Leeds Rhinos mark journey to net zero with special celebration

Leeds Rhinos will mark their continued journey towards their net zero carbon target by 2030 (for scope 1 and 2 emissions) with a special celebration at their forthcoming game against Hull KR at AMT Headingley.

The game, which is one of the biggest of the year against high flying Hull KR, will see a number of activities taking place around the stadium to showcase the club’s work to fulfil their net zero commitment and show to supporters how they can help.

This will include:

  • Working with partners Ecotricity, the official 100% renewable energy supplier of Leeds Rhinos, to run a travel survey to supporters. This will help shape future plans for the club to work with supporters. The Rhinos announced a new partnership with Ecotricity, the world's first green energy company, back in February. This collaboration marks a significant step towards integrating sustainability into the sporting world, showcasing how renewable energy can power communities, teams, and fans towards a greener future.
  • The launch of the club’s partnership with Pledgeball, a new initiative that will seamlessly link the Rhinos vision with Pledgeball’s mission to meaningfully engage fans around climate action. Similar to the many current successful partnership in football, the Rhinos will become the first rugby league club, to join Pledgeball. Pledgeball and Leeds Rhinos will explore new and innovative ways of embedding sustainability into rugby culture through this partnership. By leveraging the collective power of the rugby community, Pledgeball and the Rhinos aim to drive change beyond the pitch—encouraging clubs, fans, and governing bodies to prioritise sustainability as an integral part of the sport.
  • The Rhinos support for the ‘Kit & Equipment Exchange Programme’ in conjunction with Active Leeds will allow supporters to donate good condition sports kit that can be re-distributed to allow others to participate in sport and exercise. Supporters' donations could mean a child or adult gets to play rugby, football, netball, or another sport - or just be physically active - when they might not have had the chance otherwise. There will be a donation station in the South Stand concourse.
  • In partnership with First Bus, Leeds Rhinos will offer subsidised travel to and from the stadium. Plus one of First Bus’ 57 new zero emission double-decker buses will be at the stadium for fans to explore and see how they work. These vehicles will save over 50,000 tons of carbon emissions each over their lifetime.
  • Fans will be encouraged to use the Leeds City Council Liftshare scheme, with details sent to each ticket holder ahead of the game.
  • Partners AMT Auto will demonstrate their electric car fleet, utilising the McNally EV Charging points in the South Stand car park.
  • Fans will be encouraged to avoid single use plastics, with information about the refilling of reusable drinks bottles at the water filling stations around the ground.
  • The power used in the South Stand on the night will be generated by the PV solar panels on the roof of the famous stand.
  • The famous AMT Headingley playing surface will be irrigated using water extracted from the club’s own borehole. The club can extract up to 20,000L of water on a daily basis to use on the pitch which reduces costs to the club and provides a sustainable water management approach.
