Leeds Rhinos Secure James McDonnell on New One-Year Extension

Leeds Rhinos are delighted to announce that forward James McDonnell has signed a one-year contract extension, keeping him at AMT Headingley until at least the end of the 2026 Betfred Super League season.

The 25-year-old back-rower, who joined the Rhinos from Wigan Warriors ahead of the 2023 campaign, has become an integral part of the squad, earning praise for his work ethic, defensive resilience, and leadership on the field. The new deal comes on the back of McDonnell scoring four tries in the Rhinos win at Salford last Thursday.

McDonnell expressed his delight at extending his stay in Leeds, saying: "I really wanted to get my contract sorted. It's been a good start to the year, and I'm looking forward to staying longer now. When I left Wigan and came to Leeds, it was time for me to grow up, and I think I've matured quite a lot—being on my own, away from family. My girlfriend moved over with me, and Leeds feels like home now."

Since arriving at the club, McDonnell has developed into a key figure in the pack, known for his relentless defensive efforts and ability to play big minutes.  “My defensive effort is something I really judge my game. Often times I'm doing the stuff that you wouldn't really notice on TV for the average viewer, but I get a lot of plaudits from the lads and Brad's been pleased with how I've been going and wants me to build on it to stay hungry and get more.”

He also credited Assistant Coach Jamie Langley for the team’s defensive improvements:

"Jamie has been really black and white with the defensive systems—what he wants from us. It’s up to us to apply it, and everyone has bought in. When we stick to it, it works, and that’s what we need to do this Friday and beyond."

McDonnell believes the Rhinos are entering a crucial phase of the season and is confident in the squad’s potential:

"This is a period for us to build into what could be a defining time for our season. We’ve had some strong performances, and if we keep applying ourselves the right way, there’s some really good stuff that can happen with this group."

A tireless worker, McDonnell has embraced the challenge of playing 80 minutes in Super League, adding:

"As a back-rower, you challenge yourself to play big minutes. I want to be out there for the full game—I feel like I build into matches the longer I’m on the field. Over the last two years, I’ve developed the resilience to handle it, and I think I’ve progressed well at this level."

Leeds Rhinos Head Coach Brad Arthur commented:

"I think James has been defensively very strong for us. His team mates recognise his defensive principles and efforts and it was nice to seem him get the rewards for that hard work with four tries last week over at Salford. He has got a bright future and I look forward to seeing him continue to develop over this season."

Leeds Rhinos Sporting Director Ian Blease added:

“We delighted to have agreed an extension with James and hopefully he will be here for even longer than this deal. He is someone who has worked hard to develop his game here at the Rhinos and it is particularly pleasing to give young, English talent the chance to make their mark in Super League with the Rhinos.”

McDonnell’s extension is a boost for the Rhinos as they prepare for a pivotal run of fixtures, starting with Friday’s clash against Huddersfield Giants at AMT Headingley, kick off 5.30pm. Book your ticket for this Friday's game now at tickets.therhinos.co.uk
