Everything you need to know about... Wigan Warriors

Saturday evening's game pits two stalwarts of the Betfred Super League competition, Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors, against each other in a standout fixture at AMT Headingley in round five of the Betfred Super League, kick off 5.30pm.

After an entertaining meeting in last year's meeting at AMT Headingley, and as both clubs focus on the league after missing out on the Challenge Cup quarter finals, Saturday's contest is one not to be missed live on Sky Sports Action.

Here's more on the reigning Champions Wigan:

A brief history in Super League...

Last season's success across all competition goes down as one of Wigan's greatest campaigns in the summer era as the club retained their Grand Final crown against Hull KR. It was the 24th Championship title the club has won in history, the most out of any club in the UK game.

Like Leeds, Wigan have been involved in all 29 seasons since the change to the summer era back in 1996., when they finished second in their first campaign. Within two years, the club won it's first Grand Final title under John Monie as they beat Leeds in the Old Trafford final thanks to Jason Robinson's try and three goals from Andy Farrell.

As the club entered the 2000s, they competed for silverware and were regulars in the Play Offs, but couldn't achieve the success that their 90s predecessors had been able to under the eye of Stuart Raper, Ian Millward and Brian Noble. Australian Michael Maguire and a new era of Wigan player, led by Sam Tomkins, changed that in 2010 as they beat St Helens to the Grand Final crown and League Leaders' Shield and began a six year run as one of the best sides in the competition.

2011 saw Maguire add a Challenge Cup to his honours list before Shaun Wane took over from 2012. During Wane's tenure, Josh Charnley, John Bateman, Matty Bowen and George Williams were just some of the names that were given their chance to shine in Cherry and White as they featured in the Grand Final in 2013, 2014 and 2015; notably winning the title in 2013 against the Wolves.

They added more titles in 2016 and 2018, both against Warrington, but as Adrian Lam took the reigns in 2019, the Warriors only managed a runners up appearance in the 2020 final against St Helens.

The Matt Peet era has so far been fruitful as he's collected two Challenge Cups, two Grand Final trophies, two League Leaders' Shields and a World Club Challenge so far during his tenure. Last year's quadruple was a particular triumph, but now they look to back their season up with another strong campaign in 2025.

Round Four Review

Arriving back from their Las Vegas jackpot, the Warriors were tested against Huddersfield Giants in the first half but bounced back in the second period to ensure they won convincingly at The Brick Community Stadium.
