Everything you need to know about... Salford Red Devils

Leeds Rhinos' first away game of the season sees Brad Arthur's side travel to the Salford Community Stadium to take on Salford Red Devils this Saturday, kick off 3pm.

Despite both clubs suffering defeats in round one, Arthur and Paul Rowley's sides will be eying up wins to open their account for year in the first of two encounters at Salford Stadium this season.

Here's everything you need to know about our opposition, Salford Red Devils:

A brief history in Super League...

Salford's Betfred Super League record began in 1997, a year after the sport switched to play during the summer. 1996 saw the Reds (as they were known) walk their way to two straight Second Division Premierships in the 1995/96 and 1996 seasons under Andy Gregory, and their debut campaign in Super League ended with a promising sixth-place finish behind the Rhinos.

Five years later, the newly named Salford City Reds found themselves back in the Second Division after finishing the 2002 campaign bottom of the table with only five wins and a draw from 28 games. They bounced straight back into the top tier under Karl Harrison, who went on to lead the club to their first play off campaign in 2006. David Hodgson proved a handy signing as the winger led the club with 18 tries and 45 goals that season.

Backing up another relegation a year later with instant promotion ahead of the 2009 season, the club haven't dropped out of Super League since. Their closest shave came in 2016's Million Pound Game when the club needed a try from Greg Johnson and a golden point drop goal from Gareth O'Brien to relegate Hull KR in one of the closest games in recent memory.

Head coach Ian Watson helped take a big step with the club in 2017 as star full back Niall Evalds and experienced names Robert Lui, Michael Dobson and Todd Carney took the club to a seventh-placed finish a year after finishing in the Qualifiers competition, but 2019 was Watson's year as the club achieved what some thought impossible. Man of Steel Jackson Hastings ran the show throughout the season as the Red Devils featured in their first Grand Final, eventually losing out to St Helens at Old Trafford. 2020 saw the club feature in another major final, this time at Wembley as the Red Devils took on the Rhinos in the Betfred Challenge Cup Final. Only Luke Gale's drop goal could split the two teams on that day.

2021 was a season to forget, but Paul Rowley's appointment in 2022 has seen the club continue to compete at the top end of the Super League table. Since Rowley's appointment, the club has two Play-Off finishes, a semi final appearance in 2022, 43 wins and 26 losses in three seasons.

Round One Review

A young Salford outfit were no match for Paul Wellens' St Helens side in round one as the Red Devils fell to a 82-0 defeat at the Totally Wicked Stadium.

A number of players made their Super League debuts in 2024 and were given the chance to run out again by Paul Rowley in a tough fixture. Take a look at the highlights:
