NEXT UP | Round One vs Wakefield Trinity

The 2025 Betfred Super League is officially here as all 12 sides get their campaigns underway in round one this week.
At AMT Headingley on Saturday, Leeds Rhinos host newly promoted Wakefield Trinity (kick off 3pm) as Brad Arthur's side put pre-season behind them and hope to make a quick start to the year against Daryl Powell's side.
Ahead of round one, here's your match preview:
Opposition Overview
After Boxing Day gave Rhinos fans a preview of what Wakefield Trinity will look like in 2025, the time has arrived for Daryl Powell's side to start a new Super League chapter after promotion from the Championship in 2024.
Although they were beaten by a late George Brown try in the Festive Challenge, Wakefield's pre-season finished on a winning result as they posted six tries on Castleford Tigers in a 32-8 result against their local rivals. 2024 recruits Josh Rourke, Cam Scott and Seth Nikotemo all got their first tries in front of a home crowd and with returning star winger Tom Johnstone still waiting in the wings, there is plenty for Trinity fans to get excited about.
Johnstone headlined a number of incomings during the off-season, and the club has continued to grow their numbers with the arrivals of forward Caius Faatili from the Queensland Cup competition in Australia and Neil Tchamambe on a loan deal that sent Noah Booth to Hull KR. Tchamambe came through the ranks at Leeds before moving to the Robins but is yet to make his Super League bow.
Leading from the front will be Mike McMeeken, who was given the captaincy after arriving from Catalans Dragons in the wake of Matty Ashurst's departure. A familiar face to head coach Daryl Powell from their time at Castleford together, the former London Bronco has 262 domestic senior appearances, as well as 11 games for England between 2017 and 2024.

Trinity's first competitive test of the season came against Goole Vikings in the third round of the Betfred Challenge Cup. Like the Rhinos, Trinity's were on top form against League One's newest outfit as a full strength squad, which included new signings Tom Johnstone, Cameron Scott, Jake Trueman, Olly Russell, Mike McMeeken, Corey Hall, Matty Storton, Josh Rourke, Matty Russell and Caius Faatili, made sure the club progressed into the fourth round with a 00-00 result.
The win sets up Trinity to make their Super League return against the Rhinos as they look to win their first game at AMT Headingley since 2019. After a clash with Leeds, tough tests await through February and into March as back to back home games sees Hull KR and St Helens visit the DIY Kitchens Stadium, before an away trip to Warrington sees the club through to round four.

Round One Form
2025 is the fourth year since Super League began in 1996 that Leeds and Wakefield have met in the opening round of the league season. Leeds won the last two clashes in 2021 and 2009, after Wakefield won the first round one meeting with a late score in 2000.

Leeds' recent round one games haven't gone in the Rhinos favour, as they have only won three times since 2016 compared to one opening day loss between 2001 and 2015. On five occasions since 2016, Warrington have defeated Leeds on the opening day of the season, although Leeds got revenge in 2018 with a tight 16-12 result. Alongside 2021's win over Wakefield, last year saw Leeds get off to an electric start as Ash Handley's Try of the Season contender led the home side to victory.
Trinity's round one form is also tough reading as they only have seven opening game wins since 1996. Compared to Leeds' form since 2016, the side only has one win, which came on the road against Hull KR in a 28-6 win.
