Your guide to the 2025 Betfred Super League season

The Betfred Super League season is just around the corner, as all twelve teams gear up for 27 rounds of action before the road to Old Trafford begins in September!
With five days to go until the Rhinos open their campaign on home soil against Wakefield, here's a brief rundown of our eleven opponents in 2025:
Castleford Tigers
Head Coach: Danny McGuire
Last three season finishes: 10th (2024), 11th (2023), 7th (2022)
Ins: Innes Senior (Huddersfield), Louis Senior (Hull KR), Zac Cini, Daejarn Asi (both Parramatta Eels), Judah Rimbu (PNG Hunters), Jeremiah Simbiken (Norths Devils), Dan Okoro (on loan from Warrington)
Key Recruit: Daejarn Asi (Utility Back - 42 NRL appearances, 6 tries, 2 Samoa apps)
Rising Star: Fletcher Rooney
One to Watch: Liam Horne

A change at head coach sees Danny McGuire take the reigns of Castleford Tigers as the Fords opt for a new direction in a new year.
The Tigers have missed out on Play Off rugby since 2019, but McGuire's progression from assistant coach to head coach hopes to end the Ford's wait for a spot in the top six. The former Leeds and Hull KR half back has plenty of experience at guiding teams to Finals as a player, having done it 23 times as a Rhino and won on 13 occasions, and after stepping back into coaching, he has learned from some of the best in the game, notably Tony Smith and Willie Peters.
His first act was to slim down the squad as 11 players departed and seven arrived. Innes and Louis Senior committed to permanent deals after successful loans in 2024, plus Zac Cini, Daejarn Asi, Judah Rimbu and Jeremiah Simbiken arrive from Australia to bolster Castleford's ranks across the field.
Full back Tex Hoy, hooker Liam Horne and loose forward Joe Westerman are names to watch out for too as players with plenty of Super League experience.
McGuire has a tough test in his first Super League outing as a trip to the East Coast pits him against his former club Hull KR. Then it's back to the Jungle for round two as St Helens arrive at Wheldon Road before a short trip along the M62 sees them take on the Rhinos in round three.

Catalans Dragons
Head Coach: Steve McNamara
Last three season finishes: 7th (2024), 2nd (2023), 4th (2022)
Ins: Tommy Makinson (St Helens), Ollie Partington (Salford), Nick Cotric, Elliott Whitehead (both Canberra Raiders), Luke Keary (Sydney Roosters), Tevita Pangai Junior (Dolphins)
Key Recruit: Luke Keary (Half Back - 231 NRL appearances, 3 NRL Premierships, 210 points, 5 international apps)
Rising Star: Cesar Rouge
One to Watch: Arthur Mourgue
Catalans Dragons hope that 2025 brings another potential Grand Final appearance for the French fanbase as they put a disappointing 2024 behind them.
Four consecutive losses between round 22 and round 25 proved costly as the Dragons missed out on the Play Offs on points difference alone, but head coach Steve McNamara has been quick to plug any holes with the recruitment of experienced names. Most notably, Elliott Whitehead returns to his former club from NRL side Canberra Raiders, having played 68 games for the Dragons between 2013 and 2015. Nick Cotric follows his team mate from the Green Machine to Perpignan too alongside three-time NRL Premiership winner Luke Keary, who is one of the biggest signings ahead of the new Super League competition.
After the departure of wingers Tom Johnstone and Tom Davies, another Tom with a great try-scoring resume arrives in the shape of former Saint Tommy Makinson as he combines with Cotric, Arthur Romano, Reimis Smith and Sam Tomkins, who is back for a second season after coming out of retirement mid-2024. Oliver Partington's acquisition from Salford is also smart business as one of the most in-demand loose forwards.
Before arriving at AMT Headingley in round four, the Dragons open the season with a home clash against Hull FC against a rejuvenated outfit before travelling to Warrington and Leigh in rounds two and three.

Huddersfield Giants
Head Coach: Luke Robinson
Last three season finishes: 9th (2024), 9th (2023), 3rd (2022)
Ins: Zac Woolford (Canberra Raiders), Liam Sutcliffe (Hull FC), George King (Hull KR), Tom Burgess, Jacob Gagai, Taane Milne (all South Sydney Rabbitohs)
Key Recruit: Tom Burgess (Prop - 45 Super League apps, 249 NRL apps, 22 tries, 40 England/Great Britain apps)
Rising Star: Fenton Rogers
One to Watch: Adam Swift

Luke Robinson's first season as permanent head coach of Huddersfield Giants has been branded the 'Robbolution' as the club aims to overturn the inconsistent performances that affected 2024 and push for a first major final since the 2022 Challenge Cup Final.
A strong recruitment front sees Tom Burgess add punch to the forward line on the England international's return to UK shores, plus Fiji international Taane Milne and Jacob Gagai follow the prop from South Sydney. Gagai touched down nine times in 17 games to lead the Rabbitohs in tries scored last year, whilst Milne has 25 tries in 88 NRL games for Souths, NZ Warriors and St George.
Zac Woolford takes the number nine shirt in the club's other NRL raid, but transfers back on home soil has seen Liam Sutcliffe join from Hull FC and George King leave last year's Grand Finalists Hull KR to sign a deal at Huddersfield for the next four years. Sutcliffe connects back up with former Hull team mate Adam Swift, who had another top season amongst the try scorers with 17 before being ruled out for most of the season through injury. Adam Clune and Tui Lolohea continue to build their halfback partnership too after one year together.
A tough start to the campaign pits Robinson and the Giants against Warrington and Leigh in the opening two rounds, but they have to wait until Good Friday for a clash with the Rhinos.

Hull FC
Head Coach: Jon Cartwright
Last three season finishes: 11th (2024), 10th (2023), 9th (2022)
Ins: John Asiata, Zak Hardaker, Oliver Holmes, Ed Chamberlain (all Leigh), Jordan Rapana (Canberra Raiders), Aidan Sezer (Wests Tigers), Amir Bourouh, Cade Cust (both Salford), Hugo Salabio (Huddersfield)
Key Recruit: John Asiata (Loose Forward - 214 first grade apps with North Queensland, Brisbane and Leigh, 15 tries, 1 Challenge Cup, 1 NRL Premiership)
Rising Star: Logan Moy
One to Watch: Jordan Rapana

It's all change at the MKM Stadium as a new coach and largely new squad takes to the field for Hull FC in 2025.
Jon Cartwright brings a wealth of NRL experience and knowledge to the Super League competition after a disappointing campaign saw the Black and Whites finish eleventh last season. Behind the scenes developments has brought nine new players into the fold and two new members of staff in assistant coach Andy Last and performance consultant Jon Clarke. 2025 captain Aidan Sezer, Kiwi international full back Jordan Rapana and Salford pair Amir Bourouh and Cade Cust make up a new-look spine partnership along with loose forward John Asiata, plus the side hopes that youngsters Harvey Barron, Davy Litten, Lewis Martin, Logan Moy and Jack Charles will kick on after getting the opportunity to play first team minutes under Simon Grix in 2023.
Seasons don't start much harder than Hull's two games against Catalans Dragons at the Stade Gilbert Brutus and Wigan Warriors at the MKM Stadium as the black and whites look to make a keen start. After watching the Rhinos play three times against Hull in 2024, Rhinos fans get two meetings against Hull this year; the first at AMT Headingley first in round 11 and the second at the end of August at the MKM Stadium.

Hull KR
Head Coach: Willie Peters
Last three season finishes: 2nd (2024), 4th (2023), 8th (2022)
Ins: Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (Sydney Roosters), Tom Davies, Michael McIlorum (both Catalans), Eribe Doro (Bradford), Danny Richardson (Castleford), Rhyse Martin, Leon Ruan (both Leeds), Bill Leyland, Lee Kershaw (both London)
Key Recruit: Rhyse Martin (Back row - 132 Rhinos apps, 1054 points, 1 Challenge Cup, 19 PNG apps)
Rising Star: Leo Tennison
One to Watch: Mikey Lewis

After the highs of 2024 concluded with an appearance in their first Super League Grand Final and a first major Championship Final since 1986, Hull KR enter a new season with ambitions of a return to Old Trafford under Willie Peters. Since Peters' arrival from Newcastle Knights in the NRL in 2023, he has taken the Robins to both the Grand Final and Challenge Cup Final over two seasons only to lose out to Wigan in 2024 and Leigh in 2023's agonisingly close final at Wembley.
Hopes of silverware in 2025 has seen the club keep their squad turning over with nine arrivals and ten departures. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is the club's biggest off-season signing as the three-time NRL Premier hopes to build a platform for Man of Steel Mikey Lewis to create and score tries.
Ryan Hall's move to Leeds opened the door for Catalans' Tom Davies and London's Lee Kershaw to make a move to the east coast and battle it out for a space on the edge, whilst Rhyse Martin moved in the opposite direction to sign with the Robins. Michael McIlorum is an intriguing pickup from Catalans as the former Wigan man supports Jez Litten in the hooker role after Matt Parcell's retirement.
The Robins look forward to taking on Castleford and Wakefield inside the opening two rounds before hosting Salford in round three. The first of three showdowns with the Rhinos in 2025 begins at the end of April when Hull KR travel to AMT Headingley, and then a clash at Sewell Group Craven Park sees the Rhinos travel across the M62 in round 17. A month later, the sides will be back at each other's throats for a final time during the regular season on 21st August when AMT Headingley hosts again.
Watch the Robins twice at AMT Headingley on Friday 25th April and Thursday 21st August 2025, both kick off at 8pm - get your tickets at tickets.therhinos.co.uk
Leigh Leopards
Head Coach: Adrian Lam
Last three season finishes: 5th (2024), 5th (2023), 1st (Championship 2022)
Ins: David Armstrong (Newcastle Knights), Isaac Liu (Gold Coast Titans), Tesi Niu (Dolphins), Ryan Brown (Wigan), Brad Martin (Castleford), AJ Towse (York), Andrew Badrock (Swinton Lions), Will Brough (Wakefield), Ethan O’Neill (Burleigh Bears), Alec Tuitavake (St George Illawarra Dragons)
Key Recruit: David Armstrong (Full back - 5 NRL apps in 2024, 5 tries)
Rising Star: AJ Towse
One to Watch: Lachlan Lam

Leigh Leopards proved that their 2023 successes were not a fluke as they overcame a poor start to come within 80 minutes of Old Trafford last year. Now entering their sixth season in Super League, the Leopards hope their 43-year wait to play in a Championship Final is almost over.
Adrian Lam has headed up Leigh's revival since they were promoted out of the Championship and into Super League for the third time in the club's history in 2022 (previously promoted in for the 2005 and 2017 seasons) and alongside influential son and half back Lachlan Lam, the side have made some interesting acquisitions in the wake of losing 13 squad players.
Kai O'Donnell and Tom Amone's excellent seasons earned them opportunities in the NRL but on the other hand, Leigh have been able to bring in rising St George Dragons prop Alec Tuitavake and the experienced Kiwi Isaac Liu, who they hope will emulate John Asiata's time at the club, in their places.
Samoan Tesi Niu and Newcastle Knight David Armstrong are also key captures as the 23-year olds provide younger options in the halves and at full back, compared with the experienced Moylan. AJ Towse is also one to watch; the winger scored 35 times in 67 appearances for Championship side York RLFC Knights over four years.
A Battle of the Boroughs clash in round one pits the Leopards against Wigan, who kept Leigh scoreless in last year's semi final clash at the Brick Community Stadium. Huddersfield and Catalans await in back to back home clashes in February, before Rhinos fans get their first look at Lam's side at the end of June at AMT Headingley.

Salford Red Devils
Head Coach: Paul Rowley
Last three season finishes: 4th (2024), 7th (2023), 6th (2022)
Ins: Esan Marsters (Huddersfield), Sam Davis (London), Chris Hill (Huddersfield), Joe Bullock (Warrington), Justin Sangare (Leeds)
Rising Star: Loghan Lewis
Key Recruit: Chris Hill (Prop - 519 SL apps, 71 tries, 41 England/Great Britain tries)

Setting their stall for the season out early with a 40-12 pre-season victory over St Helens in January, Salford Red Devils look to end the Paul Rowley era with a strong season on the field before Kurt Hegarty takes over in 2026.
Two Play Off campaigns in the last three years has made Salford tough to predict from week to week, thanks to the leadership and kicking game of Marc Sneyd. Ryan Brierley's supporting play at full back has also been a threat, especially when he's linked up with the likes of Nene Macdonald and Tim Lafai who have impressed since coming over from the NRL.
In need of bolstering the forward pack's options, Chris Hill leaves Huddersfield to move back over the Pennines to become a Red Devil, as does Justin Sangare who ends a two-year spell with Leeds. Joe Bullock and Sam Davis are also recruited to join the Brad Singleton, Kallum Watkins and Joe Shorrocks in the pack.
Esan Marsters becomes the latest international centre to sign as well, but fans should keep an eye on the likes of Loghan Lewis and Harvey Wilson who broke into the lineup in 2024.
A tough opening two games sees the Red Devils face Saints on the road before hosting Leeds at Salford Stadium, where they managed to secure a 22-16 win last season. The Rhinos also make the trip to Salford in round seven as well but Rhinos fans need to mark round 19 to see the Red Devils arrive at AMT Headingley.

St Helens
Head Coach: Paul Wellens
Last three season finishes: 6th (2024), 3rd (2023), 1st (2022)
Ins: Tristan Sailor (Brisbane Broncos), Kyle Feldt (North Queensland Cowboys), Lewis Murphy (Sydney Roosters)
Rising Star: George Delaney
Key Recruit: Tristan Sailor (Full Back - 21 NRL apps, 2 tries)

A first finish outside the top four for the first time since 2013....
Freshening up the squad for the new season, winger Kyle Feldt follows in the footsteps of his North Queensland Cowboys teammate Lachlan Coote in joining the Red Vee on a two year deal. The winger has 146 tries in 213 senior NRL appearances since 2013 and ranks eighth in the club's all-time appearance makers, but was forced to end his Cowboys career on a disappointing note as he left the field injured in their Finals clash against Cronulla. He now arrives at Saints in the wake of Tommy Makinson's move to Catalans so Feldt provides experience and try scoring ability to Wellens' backline.
Lewis Murphy arrives back in the UK after a short spell with Sydney Roosters to provide another option on the wing, but the club's biggest investment was in half back Tristan Sailor. Sailor, son of former dual-code Australian international Wendell, rose to become a starter in the NRL over the last two years with Brisbane Broncos, where he played 16 times. He also played five times for St George but now moves to Saints to partner Jonny Lomax, Jack Welsby and Daryl Clark.

Wakefield Trinity
Head Coach: Daryl Powell
Last three season finishes: 1st (Championship 2024), 12th (2023), 10th (2022)
Ins: Mike McMeeken, Tom Johnstone (both Catalans), Cam Scott, Jake Trueman (both Hull FC), Olly Russell (Huddersfield), Corey Hall, Matty Storton (both Hull KR), Seth Nikotemo (Gold Coast Titans), Josh Rourke (London), Matty Russell (Warrington), Jayden Myers (Bradford)
Rising Star: Myles Lawford
Key Recruit: Tom Johnstone (Wing - 116 Wakefield apps, 125 total tries, 5 England apps)

Daryl Powell worked his magic in 2024 and after a strong Championship campaign, in which they lost twice all year in all competitions, Wakefield Trinity are back and raring to go in Super League in 2025.
Powell's capture in October 2023 left few in any doubt that the former Castleford and Warrington boss would be able to repeat his efforts at Trinity and along with a range of signings that included Jermaine McGillvary, Lachlan Walmsley and Caleb Hamlin-Uele, the club left their competition behind them on the road back to the top tier. Full back Max Jowitt was a big catalyst in Wakefield's success as the Championship's player of the year missed only one game and amassed 500 points in an outstanding solo haul, and now the full back has more weapons to target during this coming season in the returning Tom Johnstone.
After two years in Catalans, during which time he earned a Man of Steel nomination, England honours and a Grand Final appearance, the chance to come home to Wakefield was too tempting as the winger committed to the club's cause in 2025. He brought Mike McMeeken along with him, plus the club acquired options for their new spine in Jake Trueman, Olly Russell and Josh Rourke as well as props Matty Storton and Seth Nikotemo to bolster the pack.
Wakefield's opening task back in Super League sees them clash with the Rhinos at AMT Headingley in the first of two meetings with Brad Arthur's side on the road. Hull KR, St Helens and Warrington await after that in a tough re-introduction for Powell's side.

Warrington Wolves
Head Coach: Sam Burgess
Last three season finishes: 3rd (2024), 6th (2023), 11th (2022)
Ins: Oli Leyland (London), Dan Russell (St George Illawarra Dragons), Alfie Johnson (Leeds Reserves)
Rising Star: Cai Taylor-Wray
Key Recruit: Oli Leyland (Half Back - 94 London Broncos apps, 14 tries, 170 goals)

Year one of Sam Burgess' tenure at Warrington Wolves brought a Cup Final, a third place finish and a Super League Play Off semi final, and year two sets up to be equally as exciting.
Influential talents Matt Dufty and George Williams were headline-making starters last year - Dufty went on to be nominated for the Man of Steel award - but they had a strong supporting cast in Matty Ashton, Josh Thewlis, Danny Walker, Paul Vaughan and Toby King that delivered a third place finish and a semi final appearance in the Play Offs.
Even in the absence of half back Josh Drinkwater and back rower Matty Nicholson coming into 2025, the promotion of the club's homegrown talents over the last 12 months has set up the likes of Leon Hayes for a big year ahead, as the half back returns from a fracture dislocation, as well as Adam Holroyd, Max Wood and Arron Lindop.
On the recruitment front, London half back Oli Leyland earns an opportunity with the Wolves as the 23 year old makes his first move out of the capital, and PNG international Dan Russell arrives from St George Illawarra Dragons having spent eight years in the NSW and Queensland Cup competitions. Winger Alfie Johnson also comes across from Rugby Union after scoring four tries in four games for the Rhinos Reserves in 2024.
Before jetting off to Las Vegas in round three to take on Wigan Warriors, the Wolves have games against Huddersfield and Catalans in the first two rounds. The end of March sees the Rhinos head to the Halliwell Jones to clash with the Wolves before a return trip to AMT Headingley is scheduled for the 14th June.

Wigan Warriors
Head Coach: Matty Peet
Last three season finishes: 1st (2024), 1st (2023), 2nd (2022)
Ins: George Hirst (Oldham)
Rising Star: Jack Farrimond
Key Contract Extensions: Jai Field (4 year deal until 2027), Jake Wardle (5 year deal until 2029), Bevan French (4 year deal until 2028), Liam Marshall (4 year deal until 2028), Zach Eckersley (4 year deal until 2028), Liam Farrell (2 year deal until 2027)

The history-making Wigan Warriors are expected to be competing to retain their silverware from 2024 after their core group of stars signed extended contracts for 2025 and beyond.
Bevan French, Jai Field, Liam Marshall and captain Liam Farrell are just a few of the names locked into new deals to keep all of Matt Peet's key components in place alongside homegrown stars Junior Nsemba, Harry Smith, Ethan Havard and Tom Forber who have broken into the side in recent years. The only recruit coming into the fold is Oldham's George Hirst who has six tries in 31 games in the Championship and gets his first Super League shot.
Ahead of a trip to Las Vegas in round three to take on Warrington as part of the NRL's takeover weekend, the Warriors open their Super League title defence with a derby clash against Leigh at home and an away trip to Hull FC before flying out to Allegiant Stadium. On their return, Huddersfield await in round four before Leeds await in one of the competition's highlight games in round five.
