Ones to Watch: England vs Samoa

There's only three days to go until England and Samoa go to battle in the second and final test of the ABK Beers International Series at AMT Headingley on Saturday afternoon, kick off 2.30pm.

After an eventful first clash at Wigan's The Brick Community Stadium, the action arrives in Leeds as [...].

With a host of stars of the Super League and NRL on show for both sides, here are four players that you need to watch out for in particular:

Jarome Luai - Penrith Panthers

After securing his fourth consecutive NRL Premiership in his final year with the Panthers, half back Jarome Luai arrives in the UK looking to guide Samoa to a test series win off the back of a fruitful trip in 2022 for the World Cup.

As he prepares to lead the side for the first time as captain, the West Tigers-bound star made his Samoa bow in the 2017 World Cup as the side bowed out at the quarter final stage. Two years ago though, he helped turn the side's fortunes as he played every game, including two against England, and scored tries in wins over Greece and Tonga on the way to the Final. Although he is missing a host of NRL stars for the series, Luai has Panthers team mates Izack Tago and Blaize Talagi alongside him, as well as Brisbane flyer Deine Mariner, as strike weapons in the outside backs.

Herbie Farnworth - Dolphins

A flying first season under Wayne Bennett at the Dolphins sees centre Herbie Farnworth arrive back on home soil after missing last year's series against Tonga through injury.

The centre enjoyed scoring tries against Samoa during the World Cup as he crossed three times across the two games that the side's played against each other, and returns to bolster a back-line that produced some memorable moments in the Tonga series, thanks to the work of Mikey Lewis, Matty Ashton and Leeds' own Harry Newman. Despite being relatively new to the international scene himself with only four appearances for Shaun Wane, Farnworth's mixture of powerful runs and try-scoring capabilities adds to England's attacking arsenal, plus he has prior knowledge of his opponents on the opposite side of the field having come up against them during the NRL campaign.

Jeremiah Nanai - North Queensland Cowboys

After representing Australia at the 2022 World Cup, North Queensland Cowboys star back rower Jeremiah Nanai has committed to Samoa in the hope of helping the side in the 2026 competition.

A Queensland State of Origin representative too, Nanai has torn up the NRL since his debut in 2021 with 37 tries in 63 appearances for the Cowboys. Last season, he bounced back from an injury stricken 2023 campaign by playing 23 out of 28 games and scored 13 tries to help the club reach the Finals, where they made it through to the semi finals. He is one of 11 potential debutants for Samoa in this series as the Cowboys' only representative in Ben Gardiner's squad.

Liam Marshall - Wigan Warriors

A first international cap for Liam Marshall could see the winger pull on England colours after his best Super League season yet.

Since his debut in 2017, Marshall set records for appearances made and tries scored in a single season at the club as he featured 33 times in all competitions and scored 35 tries. He also featured in all three major finals that saw Wigan lift the World Club, Challenge Cup and Super League titles in a historic season for the club, and he looks to cap it off with an England cap alongside five of his team mates.
