Match Preview: 2024 Betfred Wheelchair Super League Grand Final

Sunday night sees the Betfred Wheelchair Super League close out the 2024 domestic Rugby League season as Leeds Rhinos face off against old rivals Halifax Panthers in the Grand Final at Hull's Allam Sports Centre, kick off 5.30pm.
Two of the competition's fiercest rivals go head to head for the third time this campaign as James Simpson's Leeds side look to finish the league year unbeaten after lifting the League Leaders' Shield with eight straight wins. Halifax finished second as the best of the rest, but have the players and experience of the Grand Final stage having lifted the trophy more than any side in the last decade.

Opposition Overview
Back in the Final after falling to Leeds in last year's semi final, Halifax Panthers hope to stop a confident Rhinos side, who have been red hot all season long, in the conclusion to this year's Betfred Wheelchair Super League campaign.
James Simpson's team are the only side this year to inflict back to back defeats on the Panthers, who bounced back from a fourth place finish last year to rank second this time around. After a 12 point loss to the Rhinos in their opening home match of the year, Halifax kicked off an unbeaten run with wins over London Roosters and last year's Grand Final champions Wigan, plus they stole a point from Hull FC in a tightly fought 38-38 draw. The return fixture against the Rhinos at The Edge at the start of August saw the Rhinos come away with a close win thanks to captain Jodie Boyd-Ward's effort in the closing stages, but the Panthers bounced back again to win two of their last three games prior to the semi finals.
Facing off against London Roosters, a 60-38 result meant that Wayne Boardman's side were the first name back in the Final, where they meet their Yorkshire rivals once again.

England international Robert Hawkins has led the team throughout the campaign with 32 tries and 57 goals, which has seen him be shortlisted for the competition's Young Player of the Year award alongside team mate Nathaniel Wright. Only Hawkins and player-coach Wayne Boardman have played all nine league games this year, plus they featured in the Challenge Cup semi final defeat to Wigan before the league campaign got underway.
The 2023 Golden Boot winner Jeremy Bourson has also had a stellar year to earn a nomination for Wheels of Steel. The French international started the season as a Challenge Cup winner with Catalans as he scored four tries in a 81-18 win over Wigan, but since joining the Panthers in June, he has scored 11 tries in seven outings.

Grand Final History
Leeds and Halifax are two of the competition's most experienced sides at this stage of the season, having played out six previous Grand Finals. The Panthers have been one of the most successful teams at the Final stage with five league titles inside the last ten years; their most recent coming against Leeds in 2022. Six of those Finals were played against the Rhinos, who last won the Grand Final trophy themselves in 2021 with a convincing performance against Leyland Warriors as James Simpson's side completed the treble.
The Rhinos also lifted the Grand Final trophy in 2018 as they ended three back-to-back losses to Halifax in 2015, 2016 and 2017, but suffered a shock defeat to Wigan Warriors in last year's Final as the Warriors fended off a stern challenge from the Rhinos in a 50-42 scoreline.
