Match Preview: England Women vs Wales

Saturday afternoon's action at AMT Headingley kicks off at 12.30pm as England Women get their final run out of the season against Wales in preparation for a clash with Australia in 2025.

Stu Barrow's side clash with the Welsh for a second consecutive year as part of a double header that sees England's Men play Samoa in the second and final test of the ABK Beers International series too. Having already beaten France convincingly mid-season, and with a number of Rhinos stars included in the lineup, the game is a must see for fans.

Here is our match preview for the fixture:

England Women's Preview

A strong season in the Betfred Women's Super League sees top four sides Leeds, York, Wigan and St Helens dominate the squad selections for Stu Barrow, along with Hollie-Mae Dodd who returns from the NRLW for the match.

Five Rhinos players have been included to potential feature at their home venue after a season that saw the side reach their second consecutive Wembley Final and finish second in the league standings. Prop Izzy Northrop contests for her international debut after missing out on a place in the matchday squad for the France win back in June, whilst Super League's Young Player of the Year Bella Sykes continues her rise through the ranks at club and international level. Keara Bennett looks in line to take the starting hooker role but has strong competition in Katie Mottershead, who was impactful off the bench for Matty Smith's St Helens side, plus long-serving England players Amy Hardcastle and Shona Hoyle are also included by Barrow.

Eboni Partington and Liv Wood helped York Valkyrie to back to back Super League titles and are the only representatives from Lindsay Anfield's side in the final 20-player squad, whilst Challenge Cup winners St Helens have Mottershead, Jodie Cunningham, Zoe Harris, Erin Stott, Paige Travis and Vicky Whitfield included (all of which played in both the Challenge Cup Final and Super League Grand Final). Wigan's resurgent season under Denis Betts sees five players included.

Looking back to their clash with Wales last year at AMT Headingley, England's matchday squad will have ten changes after Tara-Jane Stanley and Caitlin Beevers are among a small group of players ruled out through injury, plus Tara Jones and Vicky Molyneux announced their international retirements over the last year. The move allows head coach Barrow to give international debuts to six potential players, as a clash with the Jillaroos next March approaches.

Recent Results

Since their World Cup semi final defeat to New Zealand back in November 2022, England's Women's side have kept up some strong performances against France and this week's opponents as they look ahead to a trip to Las Vegas in March next year.

After falling to a disappointing defeat to the Kiwis, England have proved tough to stop as they've recorded high scorelines against France (a 64-0 win in 2023 and a 42-0 result in 2024), as well as running 60 points passed Wales in November last year prior to the Men's Test Match against Tonga. The game against France earlier this year saw Wigan's Anna Davies prove to be a standout performer as the outside back continued her strong form from the Betfred Women's Super League season with two tries. Leeds' Amy Hardcastle also scored in the eight try performance from Stu Barrow's side.

Wales on the other hand have two games under their belt already in 2024 as they qualified for the upcoming World Cup Finals in Australia in 2026. Tom Brindle's side defeated Netherlands and Ireland to book their place in the Finals, which included a convincing 48-6 result against the Dutch in which Seren Gough-Walters recorded three tries.

2023 proved a tough year for the side as they lost back to back games against France and England before finding their winning form this year, and the year before that saw them beat Italy and Ireland in the European Championships after missing out on qualifying for the 2021 World Cup.
