Rhinos and Wigan Reserves in action this Saturday
The penultimate game of the Reserves season sees Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors go head to head before the first teams this Saturday at AMT Headingley, kick off 12.30pm.
In the first game of the day, Tony Smith's Rhinos look to bounce back from defeat to Huddersfield last time out as they attempt to make a late charge for the top two.
Particularly after a tough start to the season when they only managed one win in four, Leeds come into this week's contest with three home wins in a row and four wins in their last six. Big results over the Tigers, London and Bradford in May and June saw the Rhinos hit their best form of the season, and despite being on the wrong side of a second half comeback against the Giants, they look to go back to winning ways against the Warriors who have won the last two meetings against Leeds in the Reserves competition.
Jack Sinfield's return against the Giants saw the half back increase his lead as the side's top try and points scorer as he now has seven tries, 24 goals, one drop goal and 77 points to his name, but winger Josh Gillespie is following close behind with six tries.
Wigan come into this week's clash one point away from the top two as they look to reach their third consecutive Reserves Grand Final. Shane Eccles' side have had the monopoly over the competition since the Reserves grade returned in 2022, losing only once in 26 matches over the last two years.
2024 has been a different story so far as the team have battled with St Helens for most of the season at the top of the table before being jumped by Hull FC last time out. Opening with a draw on the road against London, Wigan shrugged off the 20-all stalemate to win the next six consecutive matches against Leigh, Castleford, Hull KR, Salford and Warrington to go top of the table. Their recent form has dipped though, starting with a two point loss to Huddersfield and continuing against St Helens and Wakefield Trinity last time out.
With time running out to secure their top spot, a win for the Warriors would see them jump Hull FC, who have played a game more then the rest of the league, before the two clubs meet in the final game of the season at Robin Park in a fortnight's time. Defeat to the Rhinos though would put them under pressure from the rest of the chasing pack, which includes Warrington, Hull KR, Huddersfield, Leeds, Castleford and Leigh, who can all mathematically make a Grand Final place.
