Rhinos confirm McCallion departure

Leeds Rhinos Women have confirmed that Orla McCallion has left the Rhinos to pursue options away from the club.

The number 9, joined the Rhinos Academy and made her debut in 2019 against York before being selected for the first team squad in 2020. 

In 2021, she earned a regular place in Forsell’s squad, making 12 appearances and playing in that year’s Grand Final against St Helens.  The following season she played nine times, including the Women’s Challenge Cup Final at Elland Road, before an injury setback ended her season.

In 2023, the former Whitley Bay Barbarians player, was on the sidelines during the entire season after a shin operation for compartment syndrome, but made a welcome return in 2024 in the Nines Tournament.  In total she made 22 appearances for the club and has heritage number 34.

Speaking about her decision to leave the Rhinos, McCallion said: “It’s been a dream come true to play for my childhood club. Leeds Rhinos has a special place in my heart and I am thankful for the opportunities it’s given me.

“I’ve had a hard two years of my career through injury but I’m excited for new ventures in my career and Rugby League.

“Most of all I’d like to thank the squad for the amazing friendships, laughs and picking me up in tough times. I wish the club all the best for the rest of the season.”

Leeds Rhinos head coach Lois Forsell said: “Orla has been with the Rhinos since the Academy and we are sad to see her leave.  She has played in big games in her time here and has been a great character to have at the club.

“She has had a tough time in recent years with injury and has had to come back from a big operation, so I was pleased to see her pull on the blue and amber and represent us in 9s again this season.  She has shown great commitment to travel to Leeds twice a week and on game days and I would like to thank her for everything she has given the club.  We wish her all the best for the future.”
