Opposition Preview: London Broncos

London Broncos head to AMT Headingley on Saturday afternoon to take on the Rhinos (KO 3pm) knowing that league points at this stage of the season would help their claim at avoiding relegation.
Mike Eccles' side have competed in every game this year despite tough results, but with 12 games to go the Broncos need to convert chances into wins in order to keep up the fight at the bottom of the Betfred Super League table.

So far in 2024...
As they hit round 16 of the season, London Broncos are in need of wins as they look to avoid the drop back down into the Championship for next season.
After shocking the Championship competition by turning their season around to finish fifth, a late charge in the Play-Offs under Eccles saw the Broncos beat league leaders Toulouse Olympique in France to bounce back up into Super League for the first time in five years. With Eccles secured as the club's head coach for this season, nine new additions arrived mostly from the Championship, along with prop Rhys Kennedy from Hull KR, former Wakefield winger Lee Kershaw, and South Logan Magpie half back Jack Campagnolo.
A tough opening ten rounds saw the Broncos go without a win as St Helens, Wigan, Warrington, Huddersfield, Hull KR, Salford, Hull FC and Leeds were among the teams that inflicted losses on London. Having pushed Hull FC close in round three to lose out by a last minute try, Eccles' side took their revenge in round 11 as they walked away from the Cherry Red Records Stadium with their sole win of the year so far thanks to tries from Oli Leyland, Lee Kershaw, Jarred Bassett, Robbie Storey, James Meadows and Alex Walker in the 34-18 result.

Now in search of their second win, they arrive at AMT Headingley for the second time this season in need of points to close the gap between them and Hull FC, who are two points above them. Their run of fixtures sees London take on Leeds, Castleford, Leigh, Hull KR, Catalans and Warrington before they go to battle against the black and whites for a third time in 2024 at Magic Weekend.
Squad

One to Watch
Oli Leyland

23-year-old London Academy product Oli Leyland has been one of the Broncos’ most reliable players as the half back has been ever-present in all competitions.
The half back has the most try assists and involvements by a Broncos player this season, plus no London player has handled the ball more than Leyland in Super League this campaign. He scored his sole try of the season against Hull FC in a 34-18 win.
Lee Kershaw

London’s top try scorer this season, Lee Kershaw, has been the side’s main threat out wide with five tries.
With most of the season still to go, the winger is on course to beat his personal record try tally for a single season, which was seven for his former club Wakefield in 2023. He has formed a strong bond with centre partner Robbie Storey on the right edge.
