AMT Headingley to host creative showcase for Dementia Action Week

Leeds Rhinos Foundation along with Dementia Friendly Leeds are hosting a creative showcase for Dementia Action Week  in the South Stand Concourse at AMT Headingley Stadium this Thursday 16^th May between 11am and 2.30pm.

The event will be hosted by former BBC Radio Leeds presenter Andrew Edwards and people are invited to learn more about Dementia Friendly Leeds, raise awareness and hopefully open up new opportunities. 

Edwards, who wrote the Mum and Me- Dementia Diary, will lead present the day and there will be a welcome speech from Leeds Up and Go DEEP Group who will be promoting their new Dementia Friendly mural in the side road next to AMT Headingley Stadium.

The mural has been co-produced by the group who commissioned artist Griff from You Cannot Bend It Art Services and will be unveiled on Thursday by Leeds Rhinos Foundation CEO Bob Bowman and the Lord Mayor of Leeds. The mural has been funded by Zurich Community Trust and Leeds Rhinos Foundation. 

A marketplace of 25+ dementia-friendly stalls will be spread across the south stand concourse and will be surrounded by an entertainment space which will feature taster sessions of activities from Yorkshire Dance and Ascendance. There will also be a pop-up dementia-friendly cafe provided by the local Rose's Tea Bar, providing refreshments and promoting their work.

Schedule for the day

12:00-2:00 – take part in the following, in breakout rooms:

• Andrew Edwards, talking about his personal experience as a carer/supporter
• Nikki Pattison, of Carers Leeds, on their dementia support services
• Leeds Beckett's Centre for Dementia Research will run a workshop on how people with lived experience can get involved in research
• Suzi Saperia and Dr Nicky Taylor will be delivering an interactive singing session from Leeds Playhouse
• Free behind the scenes stadium tour
• 2:15 - Aspire's Skyfallers will perform to close the event, with a shared rendition of ‘Marching on Together’ as the finale.
