Leeds says farewell to the Golden Boy

Lewis Jones' family, friends and former team mates gathered at Lawnswood Crematorium on Monday morning to say a final farewell to the dual code legend.

The 1961 Championship winning skipper passed away earlier this month and was given a fitting send off. Lewis' children Kevin and Karen were joined by members of their family along with Lewis' former team mates Derek Hallas, Eric Horsman and Alan Smith along with Rugby League stalwarts Garry Schofield, Mike Nicholas and Jim Mills plus friends from Lewis' life in Leeds after rugby through teaching and his love of golf at Horsforth Golf Club.

Leeds Rhinos Chief Executive Gary Hetherington gave a touching eulogy about the irreplaceable mark that Lewis has left at Headingley whilst Horsforth Golf Club General Manager Jonathan Pearson gave a personal tribute having first met Lewis when Jonathan was 11 and took his words of wisdom at the club with him as he became a professional golfer. The final words came from Lewis' daughter Karen.

Floral tributes included Lewis Jones' heritage numbers with Wales, the British & Irish Lions and Leeds, which are now on display at the Memorial Garden at AMT Headingley. Whilst a retiring collection was taken in aid of the Leeds Hospitals Charity Appeal to build the Rob Burrow Centre for MND here in Leeds.

On behalf of everyone connected with the club, we would like to send our deepest sympathies to all of Lewis' family and friends at this time.
