Betfred Super League 2024: Fans guide to the new season

There is less than one week to go until the 2024 Betfred Super League season begins as fans gear up for another exciting year of Rugby League action.
With standout signings, classic head-to-head fixtures, and a returning side in London Broncos, the new season promises to deliver excitement, and the action kicks off for Leeds Rhinos at AMT Headingley next Friday when Rohan Smith's side face off with Salford Red Devils.
Ahead of Leeds and Warrington kicking off round one, take a look at how each team is shaping up:
Castleford Tigers
2023 Finish: 11th
Head Coach: Craig Lingard
Club Co-Captains: Paul McShane and Joe Westerman
Off the back of a below-par season at Wheldon Road, Castleford Tigers look to head in a different direction in 2024 with a squad overhaul and a new coaching team.
After the club secured its Super League status by fending off Wakefield towards the end of 2023, new head coach Craig Lingard has a clean slate to build in his first season in charge. In his previous job, Lingard helped Batley Bulldogs rise from mid-table in the Championship to finish as high as fourth in 2021, when they also came to within 80 minutes of the Championship Grand Final. Alongside his role at the Fox's Biscuits Stadium, he also served as an assistant coach under Andy Last and Danny Ward last season, but steps up into his first Super League job this time around.
There is no tougher start for Lingard as the Tigers host the Champions Wigan in round one at home before travelling to Salford in round two. Leeds arrive at the Jungle in round six at the end of March, before the Fords come back to AMT Headingley on 31st May looking to avenge last year's 46-0 defeat.
Squad movements has seen 19 players leave Cas and ten arrive. Samy Kibula and Josh Hodson both move to the Mend-A-Hose Jungle having worked with Lingard at Batley, along with ex-Batley full back Luke Hooley who moved from Leeds. Sam Wood, Innes Senior and Rowan Milnes also come in from Hull KR and Huddersfield Giants and former St Helens Academy product Josh Simm returns to the UK after scoring eight tries in 23 appearances for Hostplus Cup side Wynnum Manly Seagulls.
Along with Simm, the Tigers bring in Papua New Guinea internationals Nixon Putt and Sylvester Namo, as well as Lebanon international Elie El-Zakhem who has bounced around the Reserves setups at Canterbury, Parramatta and Sydney since 2019.
Among the outgoings are Blake Austin, Billy Tsikrikas, Jordan Johnstone and Alex Foster, whose loans expired at the end of last season, as well as Elliot Wallis to Huddersfield, Kieran Hudson to Leeds and Niall Evalds to Hull KR. Eden ends a seven-year stay at the Jungle to move to Halifax along with Widdop, who returns to the club he started his career with. Long-serving forward Nathan Massey also departs for Featherstone.

Catalans Dragons
2023 Finish: 2nd (Grand Finalists)
Head Coach: Steve McNamara
Club Captain: Benjamin Garcia
Catalans Dragons came close to Grand Final glory for the second time in three years last year, but silverware was just out of reach.
The Dragons battled at the top of the table throughout the regular season, eventually finishing joint top with Wigan and St Helens, but they missed out on hoisting the League Leaders' Shield on points difference. Tom Johnstone's try-scoring antics was eye-catching as the winger earned a Man of Steel nomination, but the most dramatic moment of the Dragons' season was when Sam Tomkins scored the game-winning try in the semi finals against St Helens.

— Betfred Super League (@SuperLeague) October 6, 2023
Heading into 2024, Rhinos fans don't have to wait long to see the Dragons at AMT Headingley as the French side arrives in Leeds in round three. Before that, they open the campaign with a home clash against Warrington and then fly into London to play the Broncos in round two. Other key fixtures to watch out for is the Grand Final rematch with Wigan at the DW Stadium at the beginning of June, a home matchup against St Helens after last season's dramatic semi-final, and a new Magic Weekend opponent in Hull KR.

Even though Tomkins and Pearce are two of eight players that have left Perpignan ahead of this season, Theo Fages, Jayden Nikorima and Jordan Abdull's arrivals give the Dragons plenty of experience along with exciting full-back Arthur Mourgue. The forward pack has welcomed new faces in Chris Satae, who has been blitzing through defences with Hull FC, and NRL duo Bayley Sironen and Tariq Sims, brother of former Warrington and Hull KR forwards Ashton and Korbin Sims.
Five players have moved to UK shores, with Adam Keighran and Tiaki Chan signing for Wigan and half back Tyrone May joining Hull KR. Forwards Mickael Goudemand and Matt Whitley also move to new clubs in Leeds and St Helens. Prop Sio Siua Taukeiaho cuts his two-year stay short too.

Outs
Sam Tomkins (retirement), Adam Keighran, Tiaki Chan (both Wigan), Mickael Goudemand (Leeds Rhinos), Tyrone May (Hull KR), Sio Siua Taukeiaho (released), Mitchell Pearce (retirement), Matt Whitley (St Helens).

Huddersfield Giants
2023 Finish: 9th
Head Coach: Ian Watson
Club Captain: Luke Yates
One of the teams aiming to bounce back from last season's finish is Huddersfield Giants, who dropped from third place in 2022 to ninth in 2023.
An inconsistent campaign led to 11 wins and 16 losses, with a run of four consecutive wins against Catalans, Wakefield, Hull FC and Castleford being the Giants' longest winning run throughout the season. Despite their drop down the ranks last season, the club brings in Adam Clune, who came through St George's feeder system in Australia before moving to Newcastle in 2022, as one of their highest profile recruits.
Jack Murchie has played for Canberra Raiders, New Zealand Warriors and Parramatta Eels in the NRL since 2018 and moves to Huddersfield along with Tom Deakin, who signed a two-year deal from the Roosters. Ex-Hull FC pair Adam Swift and Andre Savelio will pull on the Claret and Gold in 2024, along with Hugo Salabio who made a handful of appearances for Wakefield in 2023.
Homegrown player Will Pryce confirmed his move to Newcastle Knights for 2024, and Theo Fages also moved on to sign with Catalans. Josh Jones, Nathan Peats and Chris McQueen retired after the conclusion of last season.
With round one closing in quickly, an away game against Leigh Leopards sets the tone for the Giants' campaign, before they welcome St Helens to the John Smith's Stadium in round two. Although they won't face each other in Rivals Round this year, clashes between Huddersfield and Leeds are always a key fixture in the Super League calendar and the two face off in round eight at AMT Headingley and round 19 at the John Smith's.
Ins
Adam Swift (Hull FC), Adam Clune (Newcastle Knights), Tom Deakin (Sydney Roosters), Hugo Salabio (Wakefield Trinity), Jack Murchie (Parramatta Eels), Elliot Wallis (Castleford Tigers), Connor Carr (Signed Professional Contract from Reserves), Andre Savelio (Hull FC).

Round 8 - Friday 19th April - KO 8pm
Hull FC
2023 Finish: 10th
Head Coach: Tony Smith
Club Captain: Danny Houghton (Co-captain: Brad Fash)
Tony Smith is aiming for a more fruitful campaign in his second season at the helm of Hull FC. After two years under Brett Hodgson's leadership, Smith, who is one of the most experienced heads in Super League, moved cross-city from Hull KR to turn Hull FC back in the trajectory of the Play Offs.
Last season proved to be a mixed bag as a run of consecutive losses at the start and end of the campaign saw them finish tenth with ten wins, but the team has the chance to get 2024 started on the right foot if they can get passed Hull KR on home soil in the first game of the year.
Fans of the sport can look forward to three meetings between the Hull sides over the course of the year, plus Rhinos fans get two trips to the MKM Stadium on the 28th April and 15th June. Off the back of a Magic Weekend clash with London towards the end of the campaign, Hull gets a boost as three out of their last five games are on home soil against Castleford, Salford and Catalans. Away trips to Wigan and Leeds fill the end of the black and white's schedule.

Known for their previous investment in NRL forwards, Herman Ese'ese, Franklin Pele and Jayden Okunbor are the latest to follow the likes of Frank Pritchard, Sika Manu and most recently Chris Satae and Ligi Sao in moving to East Yorkshire. Ese'ese, nephew of Leeds legend Ali Lauiti'iti, has nine years of NRL experience at five different clubs and is still only 29. Okunbor has almost 50 appearances for Canterbury since 2019 and is a replacement for Andre Savelio, whilst Pele made his breakthrough with the Bulldogs with six games under his belt in 2023.
Jake Clifford's move back to North Queensland opens the opportunity for Morgan Smith, formerly of Wakefield Trinity, to come in alongside Nu Brown who featured in last year's Samoa World Cup side. Brown will be familiar to some UK fans from his time with Featherstone Rovers during 2021. Former Rhinos pair Liam Tindall and Jack Walker also provide backline options for 2024.
Ins
Herman Ese'ese (Dolphins), Jayden Okunbor (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs), Franklin Pele (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs), Jack Walker (Hull KR), Liam Tindall (Leeds Rhinos), Jack Ashworth (Huddersfield Giants), Morgan Smith (Wakefield Trinity), Fa'amanu Brown (Newcastle Knights).

Round 25 - Friday 6th September - KO 8pm
Hull KR
2023 Finish: 4th
Head Coach: Willie Peters
Club Captain: Elliot Minchella
Hull KR and their fans enter one of the club's most exciting Super League seasons in 2024 off the back of Willie Peters' debut year in charge.
The Robins particularly made a strong start and end to the regular season last year to climb up to fourth place. Out of their last ten domestic games, only Wigan and St Helens beat Peters' side either side of the Challenge Cup Final defeat, as they won eight games and rubber-stamped their Play Off place. Taking down the Leopards 20-6 at home in the Play Off eliminator, the away trip to Wigan a week later cut Hull KR's hopes of an Old Trafford appearance short, but with plans in place for 2024 already in motion, Sewell Group Craven Park will be a tough place to visit for the rest of the league.
There is no bigger matchup for round one than travelling across the city to meet Hull FC to open the season, before the Rhinos are first up on at Craven Park in round two.

The Robins managed to lock down England half back Mikey Lewis on a five-year deal to keep him at the club until 2028, but they also added quality and experienced names to their roster. A turnover in the backline sees England international Oliver Gildart and former Warrington centre Peta Hiku come in, along with Niall Evalds and Joe Burgess who can both be try-scoring weapons. Tyrone May joins from last year's Grand Finalists Catalans too, plus Wakefield forwards Jai Whitbread and Kelepi Tanginoa also move east.
May's signing sees Jordan Abdull venture in the opposite direction to Catalans, whilst key players Shaun Kenny-Dowall and Kane Linnett both retired (Kenny-Dowall is staying in a new role at the club). Brad Schneider, who proved a crucial player down the stretch last season, returns to the NRL after the expiration of his loan, and Rhys Kennedy also left after one season to join London.
Ins
Oliver Gildart (Leigh Leopards), Peta Hiku (North Queensland Cowboys), AJ Wallace (Bradford Bulls), Tyrone May (Catalans Dragons), Niall Evalds (Castleford Tigers), Jai Whitbread, Kelepi Tanginoa (both Wakefield Trinity), Reiss Butterworth (Dewsbury Rams), Joe Burgess (Salford Red Devils).
Outs

Round 18 - Saturday 20th July - KO 3pm
Leigh Leopards
2023 Finish: 5th
Head Coach: Adrian Lam
Club Captain: John Asiata
After trophy success and a big first season back in the Betfred Super League, Leigh Leopards look to build again in 2024.
Their return to the top tier, masterminded by Adrian Lam, saw the club take the league by storm. Between rounds nine and 19, the Leopards only lost once as they reached second place at their peak; Josh Charnley led the way with 15 tries on his way to finishing the season with 26. The winger enters his testimonial year this year, having had try-scoring impacts at Wigan and Warrington over the course of his career.
Lachlan Lam's impact, especially in the Cup Final win over Hull KR, saw the half-back earn plaudits across the league and he quashed any rumours of an NRL return over the off-season with a new contract extension until 2025, whilst Edwin Ipape continued his form from the Betfred Championship in another stellar season as a Leopard.
When the season kicks off, Leigh host Huddersfield in round one but will spend part of the season with a game in hand, due to their round two game against Wigan being postponed for the World Club Challenge. St Helens and Hull FC sandwich the visit of Leeds in round four but it is not until round 15 that the Rhinos host the Leopards at AMT Headingley in a run of five away fixtures for Adrian Lam's side.
Compared with last season's host of signings that came through the door, Leigh's 2024 recruitment has been focused on retaining its stars and developing younger talent. Dan Norman, Owen Trout, Ben McNamara and Jack Darbyshire have left Super League clubs to move to the Leopards as they look to break into Lam's team, but flexible full back and half back Matt Moylan is the big name signing that will play alongside Lachlan Lam.
Coming through at Penrith Panthers in 2013, Moylan had 11 years in the NRL with the Panthers and recently with the Sharks, where he played 20 times and scored two tries last season. He also has Australian representative honours to his name and State of Origin appearances with New South Wales, both in 2016.
Changes to the wider squad sees Oliver Gildart move on to Hull KR, having agreed to a short-term loan to the Leopards in 2023, and Ava Seumanufagai return to Australia. Ben Reynolds and Joe Wardle move on to Championship clubs for 2024 as well.
Ins
Dan Norman (St Helens), Owen Trout (Huddersfield Giants), Louis Brogan (Swinton Lions), Lewis Baxter (St Helens), Jack Darbyshire (Warrington Wolves), Kavan Rothwell (Wigan Warriors), Ben McNamara (Hull FC), Matt Moylan (Cronulla Sharks).
Outs
Oliver Gildart (Hull KR), Joe Wardle (Oldham RLFC), Ben Reynolds (Featherstone Rovers), Ava Seumanufagai (Campbelltown City Kangaroos), Joe Mellor (Salford Red Devils)

London Broncos
2023 Finish: 5th (Championship Grand Final winners)
Head Coach: Mike Eccles
Club Captain: TBC
Looking to follow in Leigh's footsteps as the newly promoted side in Super League, London Broncos are back in the top division for the first time in five years.
A turnaround that looked unlikely during the early part of 2023 saw Mike Eccles take the Broncos out of the bottom half of the Betfred Championship table to challenge in the Play-Offs, where they knocked out Sheffield and Featherstone on their way to setting up an away trip to Toulouse for the Grand Final. Tries from Dean Whare, Alex Walker and two from Iliess Macani proved the undoing of the French side on the day and a Super League place for 2024 was confirmed.
For their first season back, the Broncos have only added a handful of names to the team that earned promotion. Rhys Kennedy from Hull KR and Hakim Miloudi, formerly of Barrow and Hull FC, both have Super League games under their belts, whilst Jack Campagnolo arrives from Hostplus Cup side South Logan Magpies in place of the outgoing Corey Norman. The club have mainly recruited in the Championship, taking Sadiq Adebiyi and Robbie Storey from Keighley, Gideon Boafo from Newcastle Thunder, James Meadows from Craig Lingard's successful Batley side and Whitehaven's Josh Rourke.
Dean Whare is also a big miss after he influenced the Broncos' rise along with Norman. Wellington Albert and Paul Ulberg also moved on after the end of the season.
Returning to Super League doesn't get much trickier than an opening trip to St Helens in round one, before welcoming last year's Grand Finalists Catalans Dragons to the Cherry Red Records Stadium in round two. Rhinos fans get to see the Broncos at AMT Headingley twice in May and July before Leeds travel south at the start of September in the last five fixtures of the season.
Ins
Sadiq Adebiyi, Robbie Storey (both Keighley), Rhys Kennedy (Hull KR), Gideon Boafo (Newcastle Thunder), James Meadows (Batley Bulldogs), Josh Rourke (Whitehaven RLFC), Hakim Miloudi (Limoux Grizzlies), Jack Campagnolo (South Logan Magpies)

Salford Red Devils
2023 Finish: 7th
Head Coach: Paul Rowley
Club Captain: Kallum Watkins
Since head coach Paul Rowley took over in the wake of Ian Watson and Richard Marshall two years ago, Salford Red Devils have achieved a resurgence that saw them come to within 80 minutes of the Grand Final in 2022 and finish just outside of the Play Offs in 2023 after a hard-fought campaign.
The start of 2024 pits the Red Devils against the Rhinos at AMT Headingley after both clubs sent players across the Pennines during the off-season. A tough run of fixtures against Hull KR, St Helens, Wigan and Leigh follow, as well as two meetings with Castleford home and away. Out of all their opponents in Super League, the Leopards will clash with the Red Devils the most with four meetings over the course of the season, including at Magic Weekend, before finishing the campaign against Wigan in September.

Four members of Rowley's squad have made big moves around the league, none bigger than Croft's move to Leeds. Andy Ackers also followed him to AMT Headingley, whilst the back line saw Joe Burgess move to Hull KR and Ken Sio be released on compassionate grounds.
In their places, former Leeds and PNG international Macdonald joins up again with Tim Lafai as the duo rekindle their St George Illawarra Dragons days. Winger Ethan Ryan makes a move in the opposite direction to Burgess from Hull KR to the Red Devils, whilst Saints youngster Matty Foster, Leigh half back Joe Mellor and Wigan's Cade Cust and Joe Shorrocks arrive too. Chris Hankinson is also back in Super League after spells with London, Toulouse and Featherstone in the Championship.
Ins

Round 1 - Friday 16th February - KO 8pm
St Helens
2023 Finish: 3rd
Head Coach: Paul Wellens
Club Captain: Jonny Lomax
2023 was the first season since 2018 that St Helens wasn't involved in the post-season Grand Final finale, but a first World Club title since 2007 tasted sweetest for the Red Vee.
Besides starting last season with trophy success, a slow start to the domestic campaign quickly evaporated when they won nine straight games to end the season and just fell short of the League Leaders' Shield. Trio Jonny Lomax, Lewis Dodd and Jack Welsby were inseparable across 33 games they played alongside each other; a constant despite injuries amongst the forward pack to key players such as Alex Walmsley. Eyes are firmly set on the upcoming season now, with Welsby committing to a long-term deal that keeps away interest from the NRL and the very little squad changes, even despite the holes left by Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook and club legend James Roby, who moved behind the scenes as Leadership, Culture and Performance Coach.
The new team in town, London Broncos, are up first for the nine-time Super League champions in round one on Friday 16th February in the first of three home games across the opening five matches. They arrive at AMT Headingley in round five to renew a classic clash with the Rhinos, plus the derby with Wigan will take place three times across the season both home and away as well as at Elland Road for Magic Weekend.

Roby and McCarthy-Scarsbrook's departures saw the club invest in international hooker Daryl Clark and rising talent at Catalans Matt Whitley, but Wellens' team remains largely unchanged, much like previous seasons. Clark reunited with his old coach Daryl Powell at Warrington for his final years at the Wolves, but after nine seasons in primrose and blue he makes a change to join the Red Vee.
Tee Ritson makes his move from Barrow Raiders permanent after playing 16 times in his debut year, but Waqa Blake's arrival in the wake of Will Hopoate's retirement is an exciting capture. The Fijian international follows in the footsteps of Kevin Naiqama, who won three Grand Final titles with Saints, and was a part of Parramatta Eels' Grand Final side two years ago.
Ins
Daryl Clark (Warrington Wolves), Tee Ritson (Barrow - loan made permanent), Matt Whitley (Catalans Dragons), Waqa Blake (Parramatta Eels)
Outs
James Roby, Louie-McCarthy Scarsbrook (both retirement), Wesley Bruines (Warrington Wolves), Will Hopoate (retirement), Dan Norman, Lewis Baxter (both Leigh Leopards), Jumah Sambou (Oldham RLFC), Taylor Pemberton (York Knights), Matty Foster (Salford Red Devils), Daniel Moss, Eliot Peposhi (both at Bradford Bulls on trial), Dan Hill (released).

Round 5 - Friday 15th March - KO 8pm
Warrington Wolves
2023 Finish: 6th
Head Coach: Sam Burgess
Club Captain: Stefan Ratchford
The Sam Burgess era begins at Warrington in 2024 as the former England captain returns to the UK after 14 years in Australia with South Sydney.
Following the departure of Daryl Powell midway through 2023, the announcement of Burgess' return to Super League provides one of the stories of the season as he takes charge of a side for the first time. Off the back of a seven-year NRL playing career, during which he had two years out to play Rugby Union, Burgess moved into the coaching team last season with the Rabbitohs but now transitions to become a head coach with the Wolves, who fell down the league rankings in 2023 after starting with eight straight wins.
At the beginning of last season, Warrington looked to be firing on all cylinders as they were quick out of the blocks, but a losing streak during the summer saw a change of head coach and a sixth-place finish. Burgess looks to change that entering this campaign, with an opening game against Catalans on the road followed by back-to-back home matches against Hull FC and Castleford kicking off his reign.

Burgess retains the majority of last year's squad, with a few new additions in Lachlan Fitzgibbon, Zane Musgrove, Jordan Crowther, Sam Powell, Brad Dwyer, Rodrick Tai and Wesley Bruines. Crowther was a mid-season move from Wakefield that has been made permanent, plus hookers Sam Powell and Brad Dwyer join the Wire in the wake of Daryl Clark's departure to Saints. Experienced NRL name Fitzgibbon ends a nine-year run with Newcastle Knights to wear the primrose and blue, whilst Musgrove formerly played with Burgess at South Sydney Rabbitohs before having spells at Wests Tigers and St George Illawarra Dragons.
Toby King is also back at the club after a loan spell with Champions Wigan last season. He will make an appearance in Warrington colours for the first time since June 2022, before he was part of a swap deal that saw him head to Huddersfield.
In terms of departures, Thomas Mikaele returns back to Australia following a second short spell with the Wolves in the latter part of last year, along with Sam Kasiano who has been released. Peter Mata'utia called time on his career after two seasons at Warrington.
Ins
Lachlan Fitzgibbon (Newcastle Knights), Zane Musgrove (Free agent), Jordan Crowther (Wakefield Trinity), Sam Powell (Wigan Warriors), Brad Dwyer (Hull FC), Rodrick Tai (PNG Hunters), Wesley Bruines (St Helens), Toby King (Wigan Warriors - returning to parent club from loan spell)
Outs
Peter Mata'utia (Retired), Daryl Clark (St Helens), Thomas Mikaele (North Queensland Cowboys), Greg Minikin (Featherstone Rovers), Riley Dean (Mackay Cutters), Aiden Doolan (South Sydney Rabbitohs), Jack Darbyshire (Leigh Leopards), Sam Kasiano (released)

Wigan Warriors
2023 Finish: 1st (Grand Final Champions)
Head Coach: Matt Peet
Club Captain: Liam Farrell
After five years of waiting, Wigan Warriors lifted the Betfred Super League trophy for the sixth time in their history last October, but now they enter the 2024 season with a target on their backs.
Head coach Matt Peet added the Super League title and League Leaders' Shield to his 2022 Challenge Cup win off the back of tightly fought contest throughout the 2023 season. The League Leaders battle went right down to the last weekend, where the Cherry and Whites fended off the challenge of St Helens and Catalans Dragons for the Shield, before they walked through Hull KR in the semi-finals and the Dragons at Old Trafford.
2024 is a new year and the Warriors will start their title defence on the road against Castleford at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle on Saturday 17th February, before putting their season on hold to welcome NRL Grand Final winners Penrith Panthers in a sold-out Betfred World Club Challenge clash on 24th February. The Panthers travel to the UK looking to overturn their defeat to St Helens in last year's World Club clash, but the Warriors look to get their hands on the trophy for the first time since 2017.
On the recruitment front, despite losing young talents Kai Pearce-Paul and Morgan Smithies to the NRL, the club has been able to attract the likes of Sam Walters from the Rhinos and Wakefield's Sam Eseh (both of which are under 25). Tiaki Chan's arrival from Catalans is also a boost after he made 13 appearances for the Dragons in 2023 alongside Adam Keighran, who impressed in his first season in Super League. English duo Luke Thompson and Kruise Leeming left the NRL behind to return to Super League from Canterbury Bulldogs and Gold Coast Titans; Thompson is a previous Grand Final winner with derby rivals St Helens.
Cade Cust and Sam Powell's experience moves on from the Warriors to Salford and Warrington, whilst Academy products Logan Astley, Kevan Rothwell Kieran Tyrer, Joe Shorrocks, Joe Baldwin have gained other opportunities elsewhere.
