10 things to look forward to in 2024

As the 2024 season edges closer, there is plenty to be excited about across the Leeds Rhinos club. Big-name signings for the men's and women's teams make this year one of the most exciting for Rohan Smith and Lois Forsell's sides, plus the Wheelchair, PDRL and LDSL teams will be aiming to continue their growth in 2024.

Let's take a look at our list of ten things we think you should be getting excited about:

1. Rivalries reignited

A staple of every Betfred Super League season is its rivalries and the new campaign is no different.

For fans who are new to the sport or who have just committed to their first Rhinos membership, expect fireworks when the likes of St Helens or reigning Champions Wigan Warriors arrive at AMT Headingley. The Rhinos, Saints and Warriors are the three most successful teams in Super League history and games between the sides are always eagerly anticipated. Last year's encounter with Saints in particular was a dramatic clash, and had to be decided in golden point too just to add extra drama.

The Yorkshire derby clash with Castleford is always one to circle early on the calendar. Rivals Round sees Leeds travel to the Jungle at the end of March, before the Tigers travel the short distance to Leeds for the return fixture at the end of May as Danny McGuire faces off against his former team for the first time since joining Craig Lingard's staff.

Don't forget about the Giants and Wolves too - fixtures often associated with drop goals and tight scorelines in recent years.  Ian Watson leads the Giants out at Headingley on 19th April, a week after Sam Burgess takes on Rohan Smith for the first time with his Warrington outfit.

2. New faces for the men's team

A new season brings new faces to the Rhinos squad, and this year's arrivals have attracted attention from around the competition.

Man of Steel winner Brodie Croft is one of the headline signings of the off-season after two seasons in Paul Rowley's free-flowing Salford side. He arrives with England international Andy Ackers from the Red Devils too to strengthen Leeds' hooking options alongside young guns Jarrod O'Connor and Corey Johnson. An overhaul of key positions continued with Matt Frawley and Lachlan Miller coming into the halves and full back, ultimately giving Rohan Smith's side a fresh look.

NRL Grand Final winner Paul Momirovski swapped the tri-colours of Sydney for the blue and amber of Leeds as he adds to a back line of England international stars Ash Handley and Harry Newman and Tongan David Fusitu'a. The forward pack, despite being largely unchanged for the new season, also has an investment in the shape of Mickael Goudemand from last year's Grand Finalists Catalans Dragons, and promising prop Kieran Hudson from Castleford.

3. Eight games will be double or triple headers

2024 sees the Rhinos continue to give fans more rugby action for their money with double and triple-header gamedays.

The Rhinos Women's side attracted big crowds in 2023, including the opening game against York that broke the competition's record attendance. Leeds take to the field at AMT Headingley for all their games in 2024, but on four occasions, they will be featuring alongside the men's team.

Friday 19th April - Rhinos Women vs Huddersfield Giants before Rhinos vs Giants

Friday 31st May - Rhinos Women vs Barrow Raiders before Rhinos vs Castleford Tigers

Friday 9th August - Rhinos Women vs Wigan Warriors before Rhinos vs Wigan

Friday 6th September - Rhinos Women vs Featherstone Rovers before Rhinos vs Hull FC

Previous years have seen the club's Academy and Reserves teams showcase the next generation of talent to fans too and this year, there will be three game days where the young Rhinos will play before a Super League fixture.

Friday 21st June - Rhinos Academy v Huddersfield Giants before Rhinos v Leigh Leopards

Sunday 20th July - Rhinos Academy v Hull KR before Rhinos v Hull KR

Friday 23rd August - Rhinos Reserves v Wakefield Trinity before Rhinos v Catalans Dragons

On Saturday 6th July, Rhinos fans get a huge day of rugby action as the Rhinos Women, Men, and Academy teams are all in action at AMT Headingley. Lois Forsell's side open the day at 12.30pm as they face St Helens in one of the clashes of the season, before the men's team take on London Broncos at 3pm. The Rhinos Academy round off proceedings against Castleford Tigers at 5.30pm too.

4. Big year for Rhinos Women

Although 2023 saw the Women's side come up short in both the Challenge Cup Final and Grand Final, 2024 is an exciting prospect for the Rhinos as they enter their sixth Women's Super League season with developing young talents and experienced signings.

A young team containing homegrown products Caitlin Casey, Ruby Enright and Mayzi Carter, as well as Izzy Northrop and Bella Sykes, showed promising signs last season by reaching both major finals, and recruitment in all areas for this year looks to push Leeds to the next level.

England internationals Shona Hoyle and Grace Field switch St Helens and York Valkyrie for Rhinos colours, as well as Valkyrie full-back Olivia Whitehead, who is another growing Super League product. Ella Donnelly joins from The Army and Beth Macmillan also moves the short distance from Bradford

5. Return of the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon 2024

One of the highlight moments of 2023 was over 10,000 people taking part in the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon and Half Marathon, when Rhinos legend Kevin Sinfield CBE carry friend and teammate Rob Burrow CBE over the finish line at AMT Headingley.

Returning in 2024, the event promises to be huge again on 12th May in raising money to support the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease Appeal as well as the MND Association. For those inspired by seeing the runners take to the course last year, there is still time to book your place for this year!

6. Magic Weekend and its new home

The city of Leeds also gets more Rugby League matches than ever before this year as Magic Weekend finds a new home at Elland Road.

2024 sees a handful of new head-to-head matchups, as well as the return of Wigan vs St Helens. The Rhinos will get their eighth different opponent since the event began in 2007 as Warrington Wolves take on the Smith's side in the final fixture of day one.

2024 fixtures:

Saturday 17th August: Hull FC vs London Broncos, Wigan Warriors vs St Helens, Warrington Wolves vs Leeds Rhinos

Sunday 18th August: Leigh Leopards vs Salford Red Devils, Catalans Dragons vs Hull KR, Huddersfield Giants vs Castleford Tigers

Tickets are available to buy now through the club here.

7. More live televised games than ever before

One of the biggest moves for the sport ahead of the 2024 season is that every game will be televised.

Sky Sports' commitment to show every game live for the next three years, along with the bespoke Super League+ platform which launched in January, allows fans to watch every minute, tackle and try of the Rhinos' season live, home and away. For fans attending matches at AMT Headingley, the increased TV coverage means that every game will have a video referee for the first time as well.

On top of that, Sky Sports will also be showing all three Grand Finals, including the Women's and Wheelchair, as well as three Women's regular season games over the course of the season and the play-offs.

8. More opportunities for players with Wheelchair, PDRL and LDSL teams

After picking up their fourth League Leaders' Shield since 2019 and playing in every major domestic final under head coach James Simpson last year, Leeds Rhinos Wheelchair will be looking for success this year. Wigan got their hands on their first Super League title in 2023, but the competition is stronger than ever before with the Rhinos, London Roosters, Halifax Panthers, Hull FC and Warrington Wolves chasing hard to lift the trophy in October.

Leeds Rhinos Foundation launched their junior PDRL team last year alongside the senior PDRL and LDSL teams, giving more young players the chance to get involved in playing Rugby League. Although the senior Rhinos PDRL side couldn't retain their Grand Final title, all teams can look forward to more festivals and action in 2024!

9. Themed gamedays

Alongside the rugby on the field, 2024 will also see themed gamedays give fans more entertainment and experiences, all included in the price of your match ticket.

Family Day is always one of the most popular gamedays of the year, filled with fun for all the family in the courtyard and South Stand. The regular Armed Forces gameday also returns along with the annual MND Awareness Round, which saw one of the moments of 2023 when the Burrow family took over pre-match proceedings.

On top of that, fans will need dust off their classic shirts for the retro round, plus there are many more to be announced later in the year!

10. Two home games against the Broncos

The Betfred Super League has a returning club in 2024 as London Broncos are back in the top division for the first time since 2019. Last year, Mike Eccles led his side to a Grand Final appearance against Toulouse Olympique in 2023 and against the odds, secured Super League status with an 18-14 result.

Since Super League and the summer era was launched in 1996, London were one of the only teams to play every season until their relegation to the Championship came in 2014. During that run, they finished as runners-up to the Super League crown in 1997 and have played Leeds 46 times, winning 11 compared to the Rhinos' 34.

In 2024, Rhinos fans get to see Leeds take on the Broncos twice on home turf on 3rd May and 6th July.
