Triple header of international RL coming up this weekend

This weekend sees England's men, women and wheelchair sides all descend on Leeds for three action-packed matches at Headingley Stadium and the first direct Arena.

Saturday's doubleheader sees England Women take to the field in Leeds for the first time since the World Cup before Shaun Wane's side round off their test series against Tonga. A day later, Tom Coyd's World Cup winning Wheelchair side begin their two-test series against France in an exciting rematch from last autumn's World Cup.

Saturday 4th - England vs Tonga

Despite clinching the series against Tonga last weekend, England can make it a historic three wins from three if they overcome the Mate Ma'a at Headingley in the final test on Saturday.

Although the scorelines have been tight, Shaun Wane's side got the job done in the sun at St Helens and the rain at Huddersfield. Last weekend's low-scoring affair was enough to wrap the series up as tries from Matty Ashton and Mikey Lewis got over the try line in a 14-4 result. Before that, two tries from Tom Johnstone led the scoring in a 22-18 win at the Totally Wicked Stadium, even though the Tongans pushed the hosts close with a try from debutant Tyson Frizell in particular.

Leeds' Harry Newman has played all 160 minutes of both games and provided an impressive try assist for Ashton's try last weekend. He was also one of the top ball carriers, post contact metre makers and tackle breakers in only his second appearance for the national side and will be looking to feature again on his home ground.

Series Results

Game 1 - England 22 Tonga 18 (Tries: Mikey Lewis, Toby King, Tom Johnstone x2; Goals: Harry Smith x3)

Game 2 - England 14 Tonga 4 (Tries: Matty Ashton, Mikey Lewis; Goals: Harry Smith 1)

Saturday 4th - England Women vs Wales Women

Before the men take on Tonga, Stu Barrow's England Women face off against Wales at 12.30pm as part of the double header of action.

It will be the third time in as many seasons that both sides have met, with England amassing 92 points in 60-0 and 32-6 wins in 2021 and 2022. The Lionesses also come into the game off the back of a convincing outing against France back in April when Amy Hardcastle was among eight different try scorers in a 64-0 result.

Hardcastle and Keara Bennett were the only Rhinos to feature against France but Caitlin Beevers and Zoe Hornby have also been rewarded for their efforts in 2023 with recalls to the extended 20-player squad. Former Leeds half back Georgia Roche also makes her return to the UK after winning the NRLW Grand Final with Newcastle a month ago.

On the other side of the field, Rhinos loose forward Bethan Dainton captains Wales for the second time this season after a close defeat to France last Sunday. Alongside Dainton, who was a part of Leeds' Challenge Cup and Grand Final teams this year, Wigan's Carys Marsh and York's Georgia Taylor added to a squad made up of Cardiff Demon players that lifted the Women's Super League South League Leaders' Shield for the first time and featured in the WSL South Grand Final in August 2023.

Sunday 5th - England Wheelchair vs France Wheelchair

The action moves towards the city centre on Sunday as the first direct Arena hosts a repeat of the Wheelchair World Cup Final between England and France.

Last year's meeting was one of the highlights of the entire World Cup as a last-second try from Tom Halliwell stole the trophy for Tom Coyd's England. A year on, both sides go head to head again twice, once this weekend in Leeds and then once in Marseille in three weeks time. Halliwell is one of three Leeds players selected ahead of Sunday, with Wheelchair Super League's young player of the year Josh Butler and one of last year's World Cup winners Nathan Collins also earning selection for Coyd's team.

France have only named five players from the side that lost out to England last November in the Final. Out of the nine-player squad, Lionel Alazard, Jeremy Bourson, Florian Guttadoro, Julien Panella and Arno Vargas all featured in the World Cup Final, whilst Avignon trio Yann Verdi, Adrien Zittel and Guillaume Mautz and Dragons' Damien Dore have been brought in for the clash.
