Leeds Rhinos Women: 2023 Season Recap

2023 has been another big year for Leeds Rhinos Women as Lois Forsell's side have made history as one of the first Women's Rugby League teams to play at Wembley and recorded their fourth consecutive Grand Final appearance after a dramatic semi-final win over St Helens.

In case you've missed a game from the Betfred Women's Super League season, here's a look back from round one defeat against York to late drama versus St Helens in the semi finals.

Opening Round - Rhinos 12 Valkyrie 34

Headingley hosted the season opener back in April as Leeds and York met for the first time since the Rhinos' Grand Final triumph eight months prior.

It was the away side that walked away with the first league points of the season with a Tara-Jane Stanley inspired performance, whilst Keara Bennett and Eloise Hayward got over for the Rhinos.

Round 1 - Giants 0 Rhinos 80

Leeds' first points of the campaign came a week later thanks to a convincing away win over Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith's Stadium.

A relentless performance saw the visitors run 15 tries passed the Giants, including two each for Sophie Robinson, Beth Lockwood, Caitlin Casey and former Huddersfield player Izzy Northrop. New signings Georgia Hale and Kaiya Glynn opened their accounts for the club too, along with further tries for Hanna Butcher, Jasmine Cudjoe, Tasha Gaines, Elle Frain and Hayward.

Round 2 - Rhinos 18 Saints 38

Returning to Headingley after three wins in the Challenge Cup group stages, Leeds lost out to Saints 38-18 in a tough home outing. Casey and Hayward crossed the try line, as well as former Saint Amy Hardcastle, but Matty Smith's side proved too strong with two tries for both Shona Hoyle and Emily Rudge in particular.

Round 4 - Wolves 0 Rhinos 88

On the road, Lois Forsell's side kept up their winning run with a convincing display against newly promoted Warrington Wolves at Victoria Park.

Having beaten the Wolves in a pre-season friendly four months before, the Rhinos recorded their biggest scoreline of the season in the 88-0 result; Hardcastle's four tries stealing the showamong 18 tries. Young half back Casey also recorded one of the highest points tallies by a Leeds player in a single Women's Super League match as her three tries and seven goals resulted in a 26 points haul.

Round 5 - Warriors 0 Rhinos 52

The points kept coming against Wigan a week later as Leeds scored eight tries to secure back-to-back league wins for the first time in 2023.

Ruby Enright and Sophie Robinson got the Rhinos ahead, but a major second half saw Caitlin Beevers, Sophie Nuttall, Zoe Hornby, Keara Bennett, Jasmine Cudjoe and Izzy Northrop all cross the try line in a superb attacking performance, whilst also keeping Wigan scoreless.

Round 6 - Valkyrie 12 Rhinos 12

Leeds' run of form continued when York Valkyrie welcomed the Rhinos to the LNER Community Stadium in July.

A low-scoring game saw the Valkyrie head into the second half 12-4 up, but the Rhinos rallied to draw the game with tries from Sophie Nuttall and Zoe Hornby adding to Lucy Murray's try in the first half, even though York missed chances to win in the closing stages.

Round 7 - Rhinos 16 Giants 20

A week before a historic Challenge Cup Final appearance at Wembley, Leeds named a youthful side for the visit of Huddersfield to Headingley.

Head coach Forsell gave debuts to four players, including former Giant Bella Sykes and Rhinos Academy products Tilly-Jae Brown, Angel Bentley and Alice Costello. Finding themselves two tries down, the Rhinos fought back in the second half with Bentley and Sykes both getting tries on debut. Jasmine Cudjoe and Tasha Gaines closed the score line to four points but the home side couldn't find a winner as they lost 20-16.

Round 8 - Rhinos 58 Wolves 10

Unfazed by defeat in the Challenge Cup Final, Leeds didn't skip a beat in Super League action as they started the first of a four-match winning run.

On an afternoon for outside backs, captain Hanna Butcher led by example with four tries (the most the skipper has scored in a single game for the club). Amy Hardcastle was closely behind with a hat trick and Tara Moxon added two as well to give the Rhinos their first home win of the league season.

Round 9 - Saints 22 Rhinos 34

Defeat to St Helens at Wembleuy didn't deter the Rhinos when they arrived at the Totally Wicked Stadium and defeated the Challenge Cup winners 34-22 in round nine.

Less than a month after Saints had lifted the Cup at the national stadium, Leeds blew them away with a blistering second half thanks to scores from Beth Lockwood, Izzy Northrop, two from Zoe Hornby and one from Tasha Gaines who scored on her 50th Rhinos appearance.

Round 10 - Rhinos 24 Warriors 0

The regular season ended with the Rhinos securing a 24-0 result against Wigan at Headingley, after a slow start saw Forsell's side lead 4-0 at the break.

Amy Hardcastle opened the scoring before the centre added her eleventh try of the season in the second half. Zoe Hornby added two tries as well alongside Casey's eighth of the campaign, as Leeds finished third in the league table.

Semi Final - Saints 16 Rhinos 20

A third-place finish meant that the Rhinos travelled to face St Helens in the semi finals, where the two clubs clashed in one of the most memorable games of the season.

The Rhinos stayed in the fight for the full eighty minutes as tries from Sophie Robinson, Caitlin Beevers and Lucy Murray, along with two goals from Ruby Enright, sent the game in the golden point. After forcing an error from the restart, a well-placed kick from Caitlin Casey saw Robinson get to the ball first and score the crucial try that sent Leeds back to the Grand Final.
