Reserves close 2023 season with Robins trip

This Saturday sees Leeds Rhinos Reserves cap off their season as Tony Smith's side travels to take on Hull KR at Sewell Group Support Stadium, kick off 4.30pm, as part of a double header ahead of the Robins' Round 26 Super League match.

This weekend's game is another fixture that has been re-arranged after weather called it off back in April, but other than final league positioning there is nothing at stake for either the Rhinos or Robins Reserves. A tough morning at Wigan's Robin Park Arena a fortnight ago saw the Rhinos go down 44-24 in defeat to the Cherry and Whites, which is their second successive loss after a 18-16 defeat to Warrington at Headingley at the end of August.

A win over the Robins this weekend would put the Rhinos above Bradford Bulls into fourth in the league standings, but recent defeats made qualifying for the Grand Final a tough ask. Nevertheless, this season has seen the club promote its young talent from the first team down to its Academy instead of bringing external players in from Championship and League One clubs like 2022. Five members of last year's Academy Grand Final winning squad (Alfie Edgell, Riley Lumb, Jack Smith, Bailey Aldridge, Kai Morgan and Freddie Brennan-Jones) have featured the most for the Reserves this season, whilst Jack Sinfield has accumulated the most points for the team over the six games he's played. Luis Roberts leads on the try scoring front with seven, along with Lumb, plus 2023 recruits Leon Ruan, Luke Hooley and Derrell Olpherts have featured under Tony Smith in 2023.

Hull KR had a tough introduction to the Reserve grade in 2022 but have bounced back this season to win half of their games (six from 12).

A 24-24 draw with Warrington in round one was followed up with back-to-back wins against Castleford and Wakefield, during which time they only conceded three tries. Huddersfield Giants edged the Robins on the road, but after a resounding win against London, a 32-12 loss in the derby against Hull FC as well as losses to Wigan, Saints and Bradford saw David Hodgson's side drop down the table. They come into this week's game off the back of a 38-12 win over Salford, meaning that a result over the Rhinos would move Hull KR up to sixth place.
