Flashback: Huddersfield Giants

Take a look back at some of the history between Leeds and Huddersfield ahead of Sunday's game.
This Sunday sees Leeds and Huddersfield reignite their rivalry as the two clubs meet for the third time in the 2023 Betfred Super League season, kick off 3pm.
In the build-up to the game, take a look back at some classic past Super League encounters and notable names that have played for both clubs:
Previous matches
The classic
Leeds' first trip to face Huddersfield Giants on the road in Super League saw Graham Murray's side record a convincing 72-16 scoreline, thanks in large to two tries for Brad Godden, Leroy Rivett and Richie Blackmore.
Man of the match performance
Brent Webb's two tries in 2009 helped the reigning Super League champions overturn three consecutive defeats as they ran out 34-6 victors at the John Smith's Stadium.
Kevin Sinfield added seven goals too as Brian McClennan's side got back to winning ways.
The last meeting
Earlier this season, the Rhinos hit top gear with a 54-0 result against Huddersfield at Headingley.
In need of a win after four straight losses, Leeds added to their Easter Sunday scalp of the Giants with Sam Walters, Richie MYler, Ash Handley, David Fusitu'a, James McDonnell and Rhyse Martin all scoring tries in front of a home crowd.
Connections
During the Super League era, there are plenty of players and coaches that have been part of both Leeds and Huddersfield teams down the years. Here are just a few that you might remember...
- Alex Mellor: Brought to the John Smith's Stadium from Bradford in 2017, Alex Mellor became a starting back rower for the Giants during Simon Woolford's era at the club. He caught the attention of Leeds, where he spent two seasons and won one Challenge Cup between 2020 and 2022.
- Tony Smith: Tony Smith arrived in the UK with Huddersfield in 2001 and despite the club's relegation, he quickly bounced back to take the Giants to a tenth-placed finish. He became Leeds' head coach for the 2004 season and immediately led the club to glory as they lifted the Grand Final trophy in 2004 and World Club Challenge in 2005. He added a second Grand Final title in 2007 to close out his Leeds career.
- Brett Ferres: Back rower Ferres enjoyed one of the best periods of his career at Huddersfield between 2012 and 2015. He pulled on the claret and gold for the first time following periods at Bradford, Wakefield and Castleford, and lifted his first silverware in the shape of a League Leaders' Shield in 2013. In 2016, he signed a contract at Leeds and lifted the Grand Final trophy as part of the 2017 team.
