Flashback: Warrington Wolves

In the build-up to this weekends clash between Leeds and Warrington, take a look back at some classic past Super League encounters and notable names that have played for both clubs:
Previous matches
The classic
As Leeds looked to climb the table at the start of the 1989-90 season, a 30-6 win over Warrington gave them a boost at Headingley.
Vince Fawcett, Phil Ford, Carl Gibson, Richard Gunn and David Heron were the try scorers for the home side, with Tony Thorniley responding for the visitors.
Biggest scoreline at Headingley
During the Super League era, Leeds recorded their largest home win against the Wolves in 1997, a year after they had been beaten home and away in the inaugural Super League season. The 50-12 win for the Rhinos saw Francis Cummins and Barrie McDermott lead the line with two tries each whilst former Warrington player Iestyn Harris recorded a try and seven goals in a individual performance.
The last meeting
Last year's 24-18 result for the Rhinos at Headingley was closer than most fans expected after the home side led by three tries at half time. Ash Handley, Zane Tetevano, Morgan Gannon and Rhyse Martin crossed for tries in a mega first 40 minutes for Rohan Smith's side, who held on despite a second half fightback from the Wolves.
Connections
During the Super League era, there are plenty of players and coaches that have been part of both Leeds and Warrington teams down the years. Here are just a few that you might remember...
- Adrian Morley: A legend in both camps, forward Morley first broke onto the scene with Leeds in the mid-90s and made 149 appearances in blue and amber. He also lifted a Challenge Cup under Graham Murray as part of one of the club's most iconic forward packs. Following a spell in the NRL with Sydney, he signed at Warrington under Tony Smith and lifted silverware again; in the shape of the 2010 and 2012 Challenge Cups.
- Brad Dwyer: Coming through the Warrington ranks under Tony Smith, hooker Dwyer became a fan favourite at Headingley with his tries and runs out of dummy half. Over the course of his Leeds career, he won a Challenge Cup and appeared in a Grand Final before moving to Hull FC for 2023.
- Bodene Thompson: Arriving in the UK initially with Leigh, New Zealand's Bodene Thompson quickly signed for Warrington as Steve Price looked to secure survival for the 2019 season. He played a handful of games during the Qualifiers that season before moving to Toronto. Midway through the 2020 Covid season, he was brought in to bolster Leeds' pack and ended up playing for three seasons in blue and amber, appearing in the Grand Final last year.
- Richie Mathers: Like Morley, full back Richie Mathers found Cup success at Warrington after a long period in the blue and amber of Leeds. Brought through with the likes of Rob Burrow and Danny McGuire in the early 2000s, Mathers became known as part of the club's golden generation that lifted the Grand Final trophy in 2004 and World Club title in 2005.
