Flashback: St Helens

In the build-up to Friday's clash between Leeds Rhinos and St Helens, take a look back at some classic past Super League encounters and notable names that have played for both clubs:
Previous matches
The classic
John Basnett and Richard Pratt's tries heading into the games climax helped Leeds secure a five point win over St Helens on the road in the 1987-88 season.
Having suffered a drop in form that saw the club fall from second to sixth, a win was crucial Maurice Bamford's side as they looked to secure a play off spot with two games remaining.
Memorable moment
One of the most memorable meetings between the two sides in Super League history came at Knowsley Road in 2003 when Wayne McDonald's length of the field effort saw Leeds win 24-16 in front of over 10,000 people.
Before McDonald's long range effort, two tries from Keith Senior and one from Willie Poching helped Leeds keep up with the reigning Grand Final champions as Daryl Powell's side continued their winning start to the year.
The last meeting
When Leeds visited the Totally Wicked Stadium earlier this season, the Rhinos needed a late drop goal from Blake Austin to seal the win.
As the newly crowned World Club Champions returned to the UK, they were quickly on the backfoot as Ash Handley opened the scoring after ten minutes. Rhyse Martin and Cameron Smith added tries as both sides continued to go blow for blow against each other, but the boot of Austin in the final moments proved crucial in picking up the win for Leeds.
Connections
During the Super League era, there are plenty of players and coaches that have been part of both Leeds and Saints teams down the years. Here are just a few that you might remember...
- Konrad Hurrell: Hurrell was one of the most awaited arrivals at Headingley ahead of the 2019 season and quickly turned into a south stand hero. Paired in a deadly partnership with Ash Handley, he was one of the league's leading try scorers and assisters during his stay at Headingley, plus he lifted a Challenge Cup at Wembley in 2020. Signing for Saints in 2022, he faced his former club in the Grand Final, plus he added a World Club title to his honours list earlier this year.
- Kevin Iro: Following four years at Wigan, centre Kevin Iro joined the Rhinos in 1992 and went on to help Leeds to two Challenge Cup finals in 1994 and 1995. After starting the summer era of Rugby League in blue and amber, he returned to Australia but returned again to play three season at St Helens.
- James Bentley: Ireland international James Bentley quickly became hot property after impressing with Bradford and Saints in the late 2010s. At the Red Vee, he helped the club win a Grand Final title in 2020 and two League Leader's Shields. He returned to his hometown club last year and appeared at the Grand Final again after his two tries in the semi final helped Leeds book their place back at Old Trafford.
- Kyle Amor: A short period at Leeds saw prop Amor make three appearances for the Rhinos, after signing from Wakefield. He went on to win a Grand Final with St Helens after moving to the club in 2014 and spent nine seasons in red and white.
