Place at Wembley on the line for Rhinos and Warriors Women this Sunday

Wembley awaits either Leeds Rhinos or Wigan Warriors as Lois Forsell and Kris Ratcliffe's sides battle it out at Headingley on Sunday afternoon for a place in the Betfred Women's Challenge Cup Final, kick off 2.15pm.

The sides go head to head in the second semi-final of this year's competition, after York Valkyrie and St Helens play on Saturday, and have a chance to make history as one of the teams to play in the first Betfred Women Challenge Cup Final at the national stadium.

Opposition Report

This Sunday sees Wigan Warriors aim to reach their debut Challenge Cup Final, having only reached the semi final stage once before.

Interestingly, the last time the Warriors were in the final four of this competition, they were defeated 26-8 by the Rhinos at Robin Park Arena; a 17-year-old Caitlin Beevers scored two tries to book Leeds a date against Castleford on their way to lifting the Cup. Since then, they have lost out to St Helens, York Valkyrie and Featherstone Rovers in the quarter-finals as the Challenge Cup remains the only major trophy left for Wigan to win.

Like Leeds, Wigan has promoted players from within its academy system as ten players were given first team squad numbers at the start of the campaign. Key spine positions are occupied by Salihi and Grace Banks (the latter partnering Alison Burrows in the halves) plus Eva Hunter, Cerys Jones and Jodie Morris have bolstered the options in the forwards. England World Cup star Vicky Molyneux and 2018 Grand Finalists Holly Speakman and Rachel Thompson bring experience to the side as they go in search of a debut Cup Final in cherry and white.

This season's Cup campaign has been straightforward for the majority, thanks to big wins against Cardiff, Salford and Huddersfield in the quarter finals, but a meeting with Featherstone Rovers in game two of the group stages was an early contender for game of the tournament. A tight 10-10 draw heading into the final moments could have gone either way, but Beri Salihi's penalty goal proved to be the difference as the Warriors kept up their unbeaten run. Now with Wembley in sight, only the Rhinos stand in the way of Kris Ratcliffe's side for a place in the Final.

Players to Watch

Vicky Molyneux

A member of last year's England Women's World Cup squad, forward Vicky Molyneux is one of the most experienced players in the Wigan team. Having debuted in cherry and white in 2019, she is on a comeback season in 2023 after missing most of the domestic season with injury last year and grabbed a try in the quarter final win over the Giants.

Grace Banks

With five tries in the competition so far, half back Grace Banks is developing in her first season in the first team. She is the leading try scorer in all competitions with seven and hasn't missed a game so far in either the league or Cup.

Eva Hunter

Back rower Hunter is one of five Wigan players included in the England Knights Performance squad and has enjoyed a good season so far. After claiming a hat trick in a Wigan Academy win over St Helens, she has gone on to play seven times for the first team and scored tries in a 22-22 draw against Warrington and the loss to York last time out.
