Team head to head

In contrast to the round one meeting, Thursday night's clash between Leeds and Warrington saw the Rhinos come out on top as they closed the gap to the top six.

Comparing overall stats from the game, some numbers may surprise fans. General attacking stats come out in favour of Leeds, who made the most metres (1834) and line breaks (seven), but Warrington carried the ball more (205 carries compared to Leeds' 188) and as a result, had more possession (51%) and minutes with the ball (28 minutes) than the visitors to the Halliwell Jones. As highlighted later, Matty Ashton and David Fusitu'a were the main catalysts for the carries and metres metrics, as well as Leeds' Blake Austin and Rhyse Martin in particular, who produced stand out performances as part of a rampant Leeds back line.

Man of the match Austin took the game to his former side to get a personal season high of 173 metres, but also kept the ball alive with two line breaks, two successful offloads and a tackle break.

Focusing on defence, the total tackle counts finished closer than expected. Leeds finished the game with 283 tackles, most of which came in the second half specifically (191), whilst the Wolves made 295 tackles. Standout individual performers for the Rhinos included last week's Gorilla Glue Top Tackler James Bentley, who claimed the award for a second week running with 38 tackles. Fellow second rower James McDonnell was just behind with 37 as he recorded his highest tackle count since the Hull KR defeat, whilst Jarrod O'Connor closed the gap on Morgan Smithies in the league's tackle tallies as he made 31 tackles.

Key Battle

Statistically, the performances of David Fusitu'a and Matty Ashton was an interesting head to head on a night when the outside backs made plenty of metres for both sides.

Ashton was the Wolves' sole try scorer as he tried to spark the attack into life in the second half. He led the Wolves in carries (18) and ran for 170 metres, with his half break after intercepting Aidan Sezer being a key moment in the first half to prevent the Rhinos scoring. Surprisingly, Ashton's number of metres is the third highest the winger has made this year behind making 202 metres against Wakefield and 247 metres against Huddersfield at the start of the season. He also made three tackle busts and was one of two players to record a clean break, the other being Matt Dufty.

Although he wasn't among the try scorers this week, Fusitu'a's contribution was key as he led the game in carries with 21. Only Blake Austin ran for more metres than the winger, who made 156 gained metres and 84 post contact metres (the latter being the most by a Rhinos player in the match). Having Nene Macdonald alongside him proved fruitful for both players as the returning Macdonald also made over 150 metres and also three tackle busts.
