Flashback: Wakefield Trinity

In the build-up to Sunday's clash between Leeds Rhinos and Wakefield Trinity, take a look back at some classic past Super League encounters and notable names that have played for both clubs:

Previous matches

The classic

As Leeds made a run for the league leaders title towards the end of the 1989-90 season, a memorable outing against Wakefield saw Leeds keep up with Wigan Warriors at the top of the table.

The game was headlined by winger John Bentley, who scored a sensational individual effort to secure a 36-17 win for the away side.

Standout individual performance

Ali Lauitiiti went on to have stints at both Leeds and Wakefield during his career, but his performance at Belle Vue in 2005 goes down as one of the back rower's best performances in a Rhinos shirt.

Lauitiiti scored five tries in a 70-6 result for the visiting Rhinos, who had seven different players among the scorers by full time.

The last meeting

Leeds' last trip to Wakefield in 2022 ended with the Rhinos coming away with a 34-18 win in their first away game of the season.

Ash Handley led the show with a hat trick, plus David Fusitu'a got his first try in Leeds colours among the other try scorers.

Connections

During the Super League era, there are plenty of players and coaches that have been part of both Leeds and Wakefield teams down the years. Here are just a few that you might remember...

- Willie Poching: The New Zealand international swapped Belle Vue for Headingley in 2002 and was part of the Leeds teams that lifted the Grand Final in 2004 and World Club title in 2005. After retiring from playing, Poching took up the head coaching role with Wakefield in 2022 and led the side for one season. Find out more about Willie on Box 2.

- Gareth Ellis: Another player that moved the short distance from Wakefield to Leeds, back rower Ellis joined Poching as one of the key figures of Leeds' World Club Challenge winning sides in 2005. He added Grand Final titles in 2007 and 2008 too before moving to the NRL.

- Jay Pitts: Current Wakefield second rower Jay Pitts joined the Rhinos in 2009 from Wakefield and made 25 appearances fo the club. Following spells at Hull FC, Bradford and London, he re-signed at Trinity in 2020 and wears the number 13 shirt in 2023.

- Corey Hall: Centre Hall had spells in both Leeds and Wakefield's youth setups before making his Super League debut with the Rhinos in 2020. He appeared three times over two years but signed for Wakefield in 2022, where he scored nine tries in 30 appearances.
