Flashback - Leeds vs Wigan Challenge Cup history

Two kings of the Challenge Cup competition, Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors, clash at Headingley this Saturday as both clubs look to book their place in the quarter final stage, kick off 2.30pm

Ahead of the game, take a look back at the history between the two sides in the competition:

Previous Cup meetings

Cup fixtures between Leeds and Wigan date back to 1899, when Leeds won a round two meeting 3-0 on home soil. Fast forward 124 years, the two sides meet again for the 32nd time in the competition and the 16th time at Headingley.

Saturday's fixture will be the first time that the clubs have met in round six of the Cup before, with their most recent meeting before the quarter-final stage coming in 2007 when the Warriors edged Leeds 22-18 at Headingley. Looking at only fixtures before the quarter-finals, Leeds sides have won eight of twenty games played between rounds one and five. 1961 saw the sides draw for the one and only time in round one, but the return fixture saw Wigan win 32-7 as the Cherry and Whites went on to make it all the way to Wembley.

The last four Cup games between the sides in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2020 has seen the Rhinos progress through to the Final on each occasion. The most recent meeting in 2020 saw the Rhinos run out to a 20-0 lead in the first half, led by tries from Ash Handley, on their way to lifting the Cup at Wembley against Salford.

Cup Final wins

Leeds and Wigan are the two leading clubs when it comes to Challenge Cup wins, with the Warriors in particular holding 20 Cup wins to their name. Most of those came during a nine-year spell between 1988 and 1995 when they lifted the Cup in consecutive seasons (the 1994 and 1995 wins came against Leeds).

Prior to their win over Salford in the 2020 final, Leeds ended a 15 year wait to lift the Cup in 2014, before backing the win up a year later in a historic 50-0 win over Hull KR. The last time the club managed to win consecutive Cups was in the 1977 and 1978 seasons, when they beat Widnes and St Helens.
