Flashback: Wigan Warriors

In the build-up to Friday's clash between Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors, take a look back at some classic past Super League encounters and notable names that have played for both clubs:
Previous matches
The classic
Despite missing some big names, Leeds got the job done against Wigan in November 1991.
Doug Laughton's side continued their stay in third spot, thanks to two tries from winger Phil Ford and one from John Bentley, who went on to finish as the top try scorer for Leeds that season.
The classic
Leeds claimed a major scalp in their penultimate game of the 2008 regular season as they beat Wigan 52-16 in a thrilling match for the away supporters.
Brent Webb and Lee Smith led the try-scoring as Leeds ran seven passed Wigan, who had won this fixture by one point two months before.
The last meeting
When Leeds travelled to Wigan at the start of last season, the Rhinos couldn't contain a Jai Field inspired Wigan side at the DW Stadium.
Blake Austin marked his Leeds debut with a try, as well as Matt Prior crashing over, but Field's hat trick proved too much for the Rhinos.
Connections
During the Super League era, there are plenty of players and coaches that have been part of both Leeds and Wigan teams down the years. Here are just a few that you might remember...
- Brad Singleton: Born in Barrow, Singleton was made in blue and amber. Coming through Leeds' Academy, he spent eight years in blue and amber and lifted the Grand Final Trophy in 2015 and 2017. Transferring to Wigan via Toronto in 2020, he made six appearances and became a crucial part of the Warriors side that achieved the League Leaders’ Shield success in 2020 and won his second Challenge Cup in 2022.
- David Furner: NRL Grand Final winner Dave Furner was a key capture for Wigan ahead of the 2001 season. The second rower was one of a handful of NRL signings made by the club and in his first season the Warriors finished second in the table and reached the Grand Final. Leeds jumped in to sign the forward in 2004 and he proved to be a key component in helping the club win its first ever Super League title.
- Barrie McDermott: Barrie McDermott may have been born in Lancashire, but he was a favourite in Yorkshire. The prop was signed by Wigan from Oldham for the 1994-95 season but after only a year, he announced that he would be making the switch to Headingley for the 1995-96 season. A firm favourite among the fans, he famously scored a try in the 1999 Challenge Cup final and then helped the team end a 32 year wait for the Championship when they won the Grand Final in 2004.
- Mark Calderwood: Coming through the Rhinos Academy ranks, Calderwood debuted for Leeds in 2001 and went on to finish as the top try scorer in the 2003 and 2005 campaigns as well as winning a Grand Final and World Club title. Transferring to Wigan in 2006, he hit the ground running with 22 tries in three seasons and 72 appearances.
