Flashback: Leigh Leopards

In the build-up to Friday's clash between Leeds Rhinos and Leigh Leopards, take a look back at some classic past Super League encounters and notable names that have played for both clubs:

Previous matches

The classic

Garry Schofield led the try scoring for Leeds in the early 1990s as the Loiners kept a grip on second place in the league standings.

Besides the half back's brace, Hugh Waddell, Vince Fawcett and David Cruickshank also crossed the try line in the 26-14 win.

The big result

Mark Calderwood led the scoring for the Rhinos in the club's biggest Super League win over Leigh in 2005.

A hat trick from the winger was a stand out performance for Tony Smith's side, plus Rob Burrow, Lee Smith and Kevin Sinfield also recorded two tries each.

The last meeting

A commanding display from the Rhinos saw them defeat Leigh 46-10 at Leigh Sports Village in 2021.

Seven different Rhinos players scored tries in the win, including Cam Smith, Zane Tetevano, Rob Lui and current Leigh winger Tom Briscoe.

Connections

During the Super League era, there are plenty of players and coaches that have been part of both Leeds and Huddersfield teams down the years. Here are just a few that you might remember...

- Tom Briscoe: The winger made the switch from Leeds to Leigh for the 2023 season after eight years in blue and amber. During that time, he lifted Grand Final trophies, Challenge Cups and League Leaders' Shield titles, while also setting the try scoring record for the most scored by a single player in the Challenge Cup Final.

- Liam Hood: Hooker Hood came through the Rhinos Academy and made his debut in 2011. At the start of 2012, he scored tries in each of his first three games that season (Vs Castleford, Warrington and Salford) but left the club a year later. Among moves to Salford, Swinton and Widnes, the hooker had two spells with Leigh and aided the club to promotion at the end of the 2016 and 2020 seasons. Overall, he has 116 appearances and 41 tries for the club.

- Rhys Evans: Welsh international centre Rhys Evans played for Warrington for seven years, during which time he had a loan spell with Leigh among other clubs. After departing from the Wolves, he signed for the Leopards for a sole season in 2018 and played 17 games. A move to Bradford in 2020 saw the centre loaned to Leeds for the season to bolster the Rhinos backline. Even with the Covid pandemic reducing the fixture list, he played five times in blue and amber and scored his sole try against Catalans at Headingley.

- Nene Macdonald: The former St George, Gold Coast, Sydney and North Queensland back signed for Leigh in 2022 and dominated the try-scoring charts with 27 tries in 27 appearances to help the club to promotion. He is one of a number of players, including former Leopards Luis Roberts and James McDonnell, to switch between Leigh and Leeds during the off-season, while Zak Hardaker and Tom Briscoe have transferred in the opposite direction.
