On this Day - 31st March

On 31st March 1996 Leeds played their first ever game in Super League when they took on Warrington at Headingley and in 2001 they played Saints in the Cup semi final.

ON THIS DAY in 1996 Leeds played their first ever game in Super League when they took on Warrington at Headingley. Leeds had come in to the first Super League season having finished runners up to Wigan in the last Centenary Season and had high hopes in the new summer competition despite losing in the Challenge Cup semi final to Bradford the previous week. However the game against Warrington was the start of a miserable season for the Loiners as they went from one problem to another on and off the field. On that day ten years ago Warrington were inspired by young star Iestyn Harris. Nick Fozzard, Kevin Iro and George Mann crossed for Leeds in front of just 10,036 at Headingley.

ON THIS DAY in 2000 Leeds lost to Halifax at the Shay 24-16 however the game was notable as it saw the first try of Keith Senior in Leeds colours. Senior had moved to Headingley at the end of the 1999 season in place of crowd favourite Brad Godden. After ten games he had failed to cross and was receiving some criticism from a section of Leeds fans. Senior went on to become only the 20th player in the club's year history to score over 100 tries for the club and finished his career at Leeds with 171 tries to his name, placing him in 11th in the all time list at the club.

ON THIS DAY in 2001 the Rhinos travelled to the JJB Stadium to take on St Helens in the Challenge Cup semi final. The Rhinos had been in the previous two finals but came unstuck against Saints. The game was again memorable for a first try, a spectacular effort from Mark Calderwood. The Rhinos other tries came from Karl Pratt, Kevin Sinfield and Brett Mullins but it was not enough to stop Saints from winning and going on to win the Cup at Twickenham against Bradford.

ON THIS DAY in 2017, a fine try from Kallum Watkins in the second half on his 200th appearance for the club helped seal a hard earned 26-18 victory over champions Wigan Warriors at Headingley.

Ryan Hall and Joel Moon put Leeds 14-12 up at the break, while George Williams twice went over for Wigan in a ferocious opening 40 minutes.

The half ended with heated exchanges and Leeds' Brett Ferres was sin-binned for a tackle on Oliver Gildart.

Watkins added to Rhinos' lead and Carl Ablett sealed victory late on after Liam Marshall's try gave Wigan hope.
