Flashback: Hull KR

After their pre-season meeting at the start of February, the Rhinos meet the Robins in round six of the Betfred Super League at Sewell Group Craven Park on Friday night, kick off 8pm.

In the build-up to the game, take a look back at some classic past Super League encounters and notable names that have played for both clubs:

Previous matches

Leeds and Hull KR's Super League history dates back to 2007, when the Robins were promoted into the top division for the first time since the summer era began. Since then, there has only been one season (2017) when the two sides haven't met in the league.

During that time, Leeds have accumulated 25 wins out of 35 meetings with Hull KR, including a seven game winning run between May 2007 and September 2009. The Robins have picked up ten league wins, including two in 2019.

Here is a look at three classics from down the years...

The classic

Leeds kept a nine-match winning streak in the league against Hull KR running in 1993 with an 18-16 win.

In a tight affair, tries from Paul Dixon, Kevin Iro and Gareth Stephens helped secured victory for Leeds at Craven Park as they moved up to fifth in the league table.

The nail-biting finish

One of the best matches between Leeds and Hull KR at Craven Park came at the start of 2007 when only two points separated the sides.

Despite leading at the break 10-8, the Rhinos lost grip of their lead as the home side pushed themselves into a 22-10 lead, courtesy of tries from Luke Dyer and debuts Andreas Bauer.

The Rhinos refused the lie down and fought back with help from youngster Ashley Gibson, who scored a hat trick. It was too little too late though for Tony Smith's side as they suffered their first Super League defeat against the Robins in a classic.

The last meeting

In one of the most hectic games of Super League this season, Leeds Rhinos came back from 14-6 down to beat Hull KR 28-20 at Sewell Group Craven Park and claim a fourth consecutive win in the league.

Morgan Gannon's second-half brace helped seal the 28-20 result for the visitors, along with two tries from Richie Myler and one from Brad Dwyer.

Connections

During the Super League era, there are plenty of players and coaches that have been part of both Leeds and Hull KR teams down the years. Here are just a few that you might remember...

Ryan Hall - One of the club's all-time great wingers Ryan Hall is a six time Grand Final winner with the Rhinos over eleven years. He was also the Lance Todd trophy winner in the 2014 Challenge Cup Final win over Castleford, and scored over 200 tries in blue and amber. Joining Hull KR in 2021, he recently signed a new deal to extend his stay at the club.

Nick Scruton - Prop Nick Scruton spent six seasons with the Rhinos between 2002 and 2008 and featured in the club's Grand Final win over St Helens in his final year in blue and amber. Towards the end of his playing career, he signed for Hull KR to help them get back into Super League in 2017. He made 31 appearances over two years.

James Donaldson - Signed from Bradford in 2015, back rower Donaldson was part of Chris Chester's side that returned to the Challenge Cup Final and survived the Qualifiers in his first season. He also helped the club earn promotion back to the league in 2018 too. He trialled for Leeds in 2019 and is now in his fifth year at the club.

Chev Walker - Part of the Rhinos' golden generation in the early 2000s, Walker was a regular appearance maker, especially when Leeds lifted the Grand Final trophy in 2004 and the World Club Challenge title in 2005. After a spell with Bath Rugby Union, the centre joined Hull KR for two seasons in 2008 and 2009.
