Leeds Rhinos Women begin their Betfred Women’s Super League campaign at Headingley Stadium on Friday night against Huddersfield Giants Women before the men’s game, kick off 5:45pm.

After making last year’s Grand Final against St Helens, Lois Forsell’s side are hoping to go on better this season and regain the trophy they last won in 2019.

New signings, including previous Woman of Steel winner Georgia Roche, have settled into their new club and were important as the Rhinos earned their place back in the Women’s Challenge Cup Final last month.

Forsell said: “I have been impressed with the players that have come into the squad. Georgia played really well well in the semi and she had a good game in the Final.  She is a very reflective character and she is not 100% happy but it’s early doors and that’s why she is going to be a great player because she just wants to keep working hard.

“We’ve also had Emma Lumley and Alex Barnes in the pack and they have made a massive difference and it’s been great having them on board and there are other players like Jasmine Earnshaw-Cudjoe who was unavailable for a period of time so hasn’t played as many games as the others but she is looking exciting in training and she is a hard worker and is always looking to improve and make it difficult for me not to select her.”

Although Leeds were given a bye in round one, Huddersfield play their second game of the season on Friday night. Last year the Giants earned a place in the top tier of the league after claiming the Betfred Women’s Shield against Featherstone Rovers at Headingley, but they began this campaign with a disappointing 50-6 defeat against York City Knights, former Rhino Francesca Townend scoring the Giants’ only try.

Previous Meeting

Although Friday’s game will be the first ever Super League meeting between the two clubs, after last year’s game was cancelled, the Rhinos and Giants did meet earlier this season.

Both teams kicked off the Betfred Challenge Cup back in March, when the Rhinos were 38-8 victors at the John Smith’s Stadium. New recruit Georgia Roche marked her debut with two tries in the first half, while Fran Goldthorp, Sam Hulme, Shannon Lacey, Keara Bennett and Tasha Gaines all scored tries to give Leeds their first win of the season.

Friday’s game is included in the match ticket for Friday’s men’s Betfred Super League game against Wakefield Trinity.
