Young Rhinos ready for Headingley clash against Wigan
Chev Walker’s Leeds Rhinos Under-18s Academy are set to run out in front of a Headingley crowd as they take on Wigan Warriors Under-18s tomorrow evening, kick off 5:45pm.
The game is the young Rhinos’ second curtain raiser of the season, after they defeated Hull KR 45-12 in a thrilling display last time out. The result built on Leeds’ strong start to the year as Walker’s side added their third win of the season to go with big wins over Newcastle Thunder and Warrington Wolves.
Like Leeds, Wigan have also won their opening three matches this season. Shane Eccles’ side opened the season with a 22-14 win over Castleford on home soil before going on to beat Bradford Bulls by ten points twelve days later. In their most recent match, the team in cherry and white ran riot against Wakefield Trinity as eight different players ran in tries in a 44-4 win.
Walker has made a handful of changes to the squad ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Wigan.
Centre Jack Smith, who scored a hat trick against Hull KR, is unavailable through injury but Jack Sinfield and Max Simpson are both in contention for selection after missing the win against the Robins. Half back Kai Morgan, who performed well in that win over Hull KR, is likely to line up alongside Sinfield – the duo are part of a 14 player cohort that have played in all three games so far.
Second rower Toby Warren, who was also a try scorer at Headingley last time out, is one of eight players that featured in the Reserves’ 36-32 win last week while fellow forward Ashton Robinson could make his first appearance, after joining the Rhinos Academy a week ago.
