An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Physiotherapist to join the medical department as Head Physiotherapist at Leeds Rhinos.

SALARY: £50,000 – £70,000 pa; Dependent upon experience & competitive for Super league Rugby League

LOCATION: Leeds Rugby Academy Training Ground, Kirkstall, Leeds

CONTRACT TYPE: Permanent (Full time: Includes weekend/bank holiday work)

JOB DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will join an excellent science, medicine, and performance team, working at one of the most successful clubs in sport. This includes a medical team of four Doctors, six Physiotherapists, a science team of eleven PhD students / established researchers across Leeds Rhinos, in addition to the coaching and performance staff team. The successful candidate will report directly to the Performance Director, Head of Medical and Head Coach.

Working closely with Performance Director, Richard Hunwicks and Head of Medical Dr Marwan Al-Dawoud who excel in their fields of Sports Performance and Sports Medicine the ideal candidate must have excellent communication, interpersonal and managerial skills to represent the department in MDT situations. Clinically the candidate must exhibit excellent knowledge of current evidence-based practice, have a thorough understanding of upper, lower and spinal pathologies.

Led by Professor Ben Jones, Leeds Rhinos work in close partnership with Leeds Beckett University which enables the club to access expertise in sports science, sports psychology and nutrition, along with access to the new £45 million world class new build facilities at the Carnegie School of Sport.

The Head Physiotherapist must demonstrate a confident ability to diagnose, treat and rehabilitate injuries within an appropriate time-frame, with a prognosis in line with those of sporting demands and concurrent training. Where necessary the Head Physiotherapist must support the senior and academy physiotherapists in their ability to provide the same pathway of care, facilitating their development as independent clinicians.

The duties consist of but are not exclusive to the following:

  • Assessment, diagnosis and rehabilitation of all senior squad players
  • Screening of short and long-term injury predispositions
  • Design and implement management plans for injured players
  • Provide pitch-side trauma cover for training and 1st team friendly, league and cup matches
  • Appropriate record keeping in line with medico-legal requirements and those of regulatory bodies
  • General house-keeping and maintenance of the department
  • Be the main point of liaison within the MDT
  • Maintain strong working relationships with the Strength & Conditioning and Performance team regarding training schedules, workload, and programmes both on field and gym based
  • Have a clear and transparent pathway of communication with the Head of Medical, Head Coach and other stakeholders
  • Take an active role in maintenance of standards and criteria set within the RFL audit
  • Take an active role in development of all staff within the department inclusive of 1st team and academy. One session (1/2 day a week designated to liaison with the academy)
  • Maintain and drive the standards of discipline, respect and professional behaviour within the department

Essential criteria:

  • BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy or equivalent degree
  • Current member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP)
  • Current registration with the HCPC (Physiotherapy)
  • Prior experience working with elite sports professionals
  • Prior experience of pitch-side duties
  • Prior clinical experience in the musculoskeletal setting including the use of contemporary methods of injury management and functional rehabilitation as part of a return to play pathway
  • Minimum of 6 years post graduate experience
  • Knowledge of strength and conditioning principles
  • Ability to lead a team of physiotherapists
  • IMMOFP or equivalent qualified

Desirable criteria:

  • Minimum 4 years experience in rugby, or elite full-time sport environment
  • Previous experience as a Head Physiotherapist
  • MSc or other equivalent post-graduate qualification
