Top Five Magic Weekend Clashes

The Dacia Magic Weekend is back in 2021 as Leeds Rhinos take on Hull FC for the third time this season to close out Saturday’s fixtures. After the annual rugby league festival was abandoned in 2020, the event will once again be hosted at St James’ Park in Newcastle and you can book your tickets here.

Ahead of the match, here is a trip down memory lane with a look back at three of the top moments from previous Super League League clashes between the sides.

5. 2014 – Rhinos lose out to Warriors in thriller

Leeds Rhinos fought back from 18-4 down but could not snatch victory against Wigan at Etihad Stadium despite two tries from Ryan Hall. Anthony Gelling, Blake Green and Michael McIlorum helped the Warriors react to Ryan Hall’s early try before Hall and Carl Ablett added their names to the scoresheet in vain as the Rhinos fell to their second consecutive defeat to Wigan at the Magic Weekend.

4. 2010 – Buderus saves Leeds with late try

The Rhinos recorded an incredible 34-30 win over Wakefield at Murrayfield having trailed 28-10 in the first half in 2010. The two sides had never met at the Magic Weekend before but the tie proved entertaining as Trinity pushed the champions for the full eighty minutes. In the end, Danny Buderus came to Leeds’ rescue; the hooker taking an offload from Webb to win the game for Brian McClennan’s side.

3. 2019 – Leeds hold on for important win over Broncos

Leeds and London produced a heart stopping contest as the Rhinos let a 24-10 lead be eroded in the final minutes before holding on for the all important two league points with a 24-22 win. Both sides came into the game close in league table and the match proved to be a must win. Richie Myler, Jack Walker, Richie Myler, Harry Newman and Ash Handley led the charge for the Rhinos before the Broncos fought back, but Richard Agar’s side did well to hold on.

2. 2012 – Five for McGuire

Five tries from Danny McGuire helped the Rhinos to a hard earned 37-22 win over Bradford Bulls to take them back into the top eight. The Rhinos were looking to continue their unbeaten record at the Magic Weekend and avenge their defeat earlier this season at Odsal against a determined Bulls outfit. McGuire led the charge for Brian McDermott’s side in the 37-22 result, while Carl Ablett added to the Rhinos’ scoreline.

1. 2007 – Tansey caps off Leeds fightback

Leeds and Bradford brought Millennium Magic to a dramatic end with the result decided in the last second of one of the most dramatic games in Super League history. The game had everything as both teams slugged it out for top spot in engage Super League but it was the Rhinos who came out on top thanks to tries from Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Brent Webb (3), Keith Senior, Rob Burrow and Jordan Tansey, who scored the winning try.

The Dacia Magic Weekend returns at Newcastle’s St James’s Park for 2021, with six matches across Saturday 4th September and Sunday 5th September in an action packed two-days. With the Dacia Magic Weekend coming at the crucial run in to the season this year for the first time, results could play a massive part in the outcome on each team’s season.

The Rhinos close out Saturday’s fixtures against Hull FC, kick off 7.30pm, following Castleford Tigers against Salford Red Devils and St Helens versus Catalans Dragons.

The next day will see Huddersfield Giants take on Wakefield Trinity, Wigan Warriors face Warrington Wolves and Leigh Centurions round off the weekend against Hull KR.
