On this Day – 12th August

ON THIS DAY in 2002 Daryl Powell signed Dave Furner for the Rhinos. Dave joined Leeds from Wigan Warriors, where he had made 58 appearances and scored 21 tries and 13 goals and had been instrumental in their Challenge Cup win in 2002. Dave spent two seasons with the Rhinos. In total he made 32 appearances for the Rhinos and scored eight tries and 27 goals helping the Rhinos end a 32 year wait to win the title as part of the team that won the Grand Final at Old Trafford in 2004, Furner’s final game before retirement. He returned to the club in 2019 as Head Coach but left after a short period in charge.

ON THIS DAY in 1950 Great Britain played New Zealand and lost 13-20 in Auckland. It was the second Test game of the tour and it was to be the Lions second defeat. In the side that day was Leeds’ top try scorer for the previous season Dicky Williams, he had played in the first Test and in this match collected his sixth cap.

ON THIS DAY in 2011, Leeds Rhinos took on Castleford Tigers in Super League at Headingley just a week after the two sides had met in the Challenge Cup semi final. The Rhinos had won that one in extra time but the gap was much larger this time around as the home side ran out 56-0 winners.

Leeds led 20-0 at the break through Jamie Jones-Buchanan, Ryan Hall and Kallum Watkins.  And they showed no mercy by running in a further seven tries after the interval, with Brent Webb and Rob Burrow both crossing twice. 

Ben Jones-Bishop, Danny McGuire and Ali Lauitiiti were also on the scoresheet.

ON THIS DAY in 2016, Leeds Rhinos secured a vital 22-18 win over Hull KR in the Super 8s Qualifiers.

The Rhinos picked up their second win in the Qualifiers with a 22-18 win over the Robins at Emerald Headingley. In a tight encounter, Kallum Watkins and James Greenwood touched down for either side before hooker James Segeyaro scored two tries from dummy half to seal the win for the Rhinos.
