On this Day – 3rd July

ON THIS DAY in 1954 Lewis Jones was the star for Great Britain as the side recorded a 38-21 win over Australia in Brisbane. Jones scored 10 goals in the match, setting the record for most goals in a game against Australia and with this 20 points, he set the record for most points in a game against Australia. It was the second Test game the sides had played that year, with Australia being the victorious team in the first game just a month earlier in Sydney. This performance though was much better from the Great Britain side and with Wigan’s Billy Boston amongst the try scorers on the day and with Jones’ success from the boot the side were 38-21 winners.

ON THIS DAY in 1920, Leeds player Jim Bacon was on the wing for Great Britain as they took on Australia in Sydney in front of a crowd of 40,000 fans. The Lions were level at 8-8 at half time but lost out 21-8 in the end to lose the series.

ON THIS DAY in 1992, Great Britain were cruelly denied a series win in Australia. Having defeated the hosts 33-10 in Melbourne in the second Test, there was everything to play for heading to Brisbane. World Cup points were also awarded for the game but Great Britain only managed a try from Martin Offiah in a 16-10 defeat. Leeds star Garry Schofield captained the Lions as the only Leeds man in the side.

ON THIS DAY in 1998 Leeds played Bradford at Headingley. The teams had already played each other at the beginning of the season and on that occasion the Rhinos defeated the Bulls on their home ground. Coming into this game Leeds had bounced back from their first defeat of the season against Hull Sharks to record two consecutive victories against Halifax and Warrington, but in this match as they met their fiercest rivals they were unable to make it a third successive win. Francis Cummins, who was to finish the season as the side’s top try scorer, notched up a brace of tries and Marvin Golden and Graham Holroyd scored one a piece. Iestyn Harris added the rest of the points with 3 goals but this was not enough and the team lost 33-22.

ON THIS DAY in 2010, the Rhinos welcome St Helens to Headingley in a repeat of the previous three Super League Grand Finals.

Saints had won the corresponding fixture away but it was the Rhinos who took the victory thanks to two tries from Danny McGuire and one each for Chris Clarkson, Brett Delaney and Ryan Hall.

ON THIS DAY in 2015, Leeds Rhinos gave a debut to new signing Mitch Garbutt. The Australian had signed from Melbourne Storm and made an immediate impression as Leeds defeated St Helens at Headingley.

The Rhinos moved three points clear at the top of Super League with Ash Handley crossing for his second hat trick in two appearances against Saints in the 46-18 win.

ON THIS DAY in 2016 the Rhinos lost a crucial game to Widnes Vikings at Headingley in the toughest of circumstances. The result, in the final mix up at the end of the season, would mean that Leeds were condemned to play in the Qualifiers rather than the Super 8s at the end of the season.

Joe Mellor struck a dramatic late drop-goal as Widnes Vikings won at Super League champions Leeds to officially end the defence of their title.

Kallum Watkins, Ryan Hall and Joel Moon crossed for the hosts at Headingley to open up a 16-10 lead at the break.

But, after Mitch Garbutt’s try, Patrick Ah Van and Rhys Hanbury levelled it at 22-22, before Mellor won the game.

ON THIS DAY in 1971, former Tongan Rugby Union international Sateki Tuipulotu was born.

Tuipulotu switched codes to join Leeds midway through the disastrous 1996 Super League season. He made his debut against Paris St Germain in the French capital on 10th May 1996.

A talented goal kicker, he made just nine appearances for Leeds, scoring a try and two goals before returning to Rugby Union to join Leeds RUFC, who had moved in as tenants at Headingley.

His only try for Leeds RLFC came in a narrow, late defeat at Bramall Lane against Sheffield. He scored 773 points for the Tykes in 78 appearances, moving on to Worcester Warriors where he was similarly prolific.
