ON THIS DAY in 1932, Leeds Championship winning prop Don Robinson was born. Born in Castleford, he joined Leeds, he signed for the club in 1956 from Wakefield, already a Great Britain international, and went on to win the Championship and Challenge Cup with the club.
ON THIS DAY in 1999 Leeds played Gateshead in Super League. Following a busy month in May that had seen the team play seven fixtures including the Challenge Cup final, the Rhinos were faced with a home tie against Gateshead Thunder. It was the second time the teams had played each other in the league, with the Rhinos collecting the two points in the first game with a 24-14 win. In this match Leroy Rivett continued his amazing try scoring form over the season with two tries and Francis Cummins, Paul Sterling, Ryan Sheridan and Marcus St Hilaire also added one apiece to give the Rhinos victory. Iestyn Harris wrapped up the win for the home side with four goals to bring the final score to 32-12.
ON THIS DAY in 2000 the Rhinos took on Wakefield and recorded their third successive victory. Coming into this game Leeds had bounced back from an embarrassing 44-2 defeat against their great rivals Bradford Bulls to grab wins against Wigan and Castleford. Leeds had opened their Super League V campaign against Wakefield away and on that occasion got off to the worse start by losing out 22-18. In this game though they got it right thanks to a hat trick from Karl Pratt, two tries from Paul Sterling and one try from Adrian Morley. Iestyn Harris once again added the rest of the points with 3 successful goals.
ON THIS DAY in 2006 Leeds were in action in the Challenge Cup against Harlequins. The Rhinos booked their place in the semi final for the twelfth time in 14 years in a game that was a repeat of the 1999 Challenge Cup Final.
ON THIS DAY in 2010, Leeds Rhinos welcomed Wakefield Trinity Wildcats to Headingley for another cracking West Yorkshire derby clash.
The two teams had met just a couple of weeks before at the Magic Weekend in Edinburgh and they served up another classic clash here.
