Richie Mathers looks to evade Jamie Jones-Buchanan

ON THIS DAY in 1995, Leeds secured an impressive win over St Helens in the penultimate game of the season as they book their spot in the Premiership Final.

ON THIS DAY in 1976 former Leeds player Damian Gibson was born. Damian joined the Rhinos from North Queensland Cowboys in January 1997 along with Jamie Mathiou. A tremendously exiting player, he only played at Headingley for one season but only missed four games in a season that saw him play against his former club in the World Club Championship. He scored six tries in 28 games, including an incredible try against Adelaide Rams when, on the brink of half time, Iestyn Harris kicked through from the base of a scrum in his own half which Gibson read perfectly to score.

He won the Players Player of the Season in his only season at the club. Gibson played for two seasons at North Queensland Cowboys after joining them in January 1995 from Newcastle Knights. After leaving Leeds, Damian joined Halifax Blue Sox, where he spent three seasons before moving onto Salford City Reds. In December 2002, after the Reds had been relegated from Super League, Gibson moved on again, this time moving to Castleford Tigers, making his debut against Leeds at Headingley on Boxing Day 2002. Damian represented Wales in 1999 and retained his place in the squad for the World Cup in 2000, although he did not play.

On this day in 2000 Leeds played Hull FC in Super League. Earlier that season the teams had played each other in the semi final of the Challenge Cup and had won 28-22 but in this game it was the Airlie Birds who claimed the victory.

Adrian Morley, Richie Blackmore, Andy Hay and Karl Pratt all scored tries each and Iestyn Harris kicked 3 goals, but it was not enough and Hull FC ended as the 26-22 winners.

In 2010, Leeds took on Warrington Wolves at Headingley. The Rhinos recorded an epic 26-16 win but they were made to fight all the way for it by the visitors.

Warrington under Tony Smith had been in sensational form, challenging Wigan at the top of the table. There were some fun and games before kick off when Warrington went to the Carnegie Stand end of the pitch only for Leeds to come out and go to their usual end. Referee Ben Thaler had the final say and sent Warrington to the other end of the pitch.

ON THIS DAY in 2017, Leeds Rhinos welcomed Barrow to Headingley in the Challenge Cup with Joel Moon crossing for a hat trick. Barrow battled hard against their Super League opponent but were unable to stem the flood of points as the Rhinos ran out 72-10 winners.
