On this Day – 4th May

Andy Hay scores against St Helens in 2001

ON THIS DAY in 1975, Leeds defeated Hull Kingston Rovers in the Premiership Trophy semi final at Headingley to set up a final game of the season against Saints at Central Park in the Final.

Against Rovers, the home side were prompted on by the ever-industrious Keith Hepworth to win an enthralling Semi-Final. The home side out scored the visitors four tries to two with the Loiners tries coming from Les Dyl, Alan Smith, Mel Mason and Ray Batten along with three goals from three goals from John Holmes to complete the 18-8 win.

ON THIS DAY in 1999 Leeds played St Helens in Super League. Coming into this game the Rhinos had just secured the Challenge Cup with an amazing win over London Broncos at Wembley, but in this league fixture were brought back down to earth with what was to be their biggest defeat of the season. Leeds had actually beaten St Helens to get to the final, but in this game Saints took revenge and recorded a convincing win over the Rhinos. Francis Cummins, Darren Fleary and Andy Hay were the Rhinos only try scorers and Kevin Sinfield kicked three goals, but it counted little as Saints scored 62 points to see Leeds lose their fourth league game of the season.

ON THIS DAY in 2001 Leeds once again took on St Helens, but this time it was Leeds who were the comfortable winners, notching up their biggest league win of the season and avenging a Cup defeat against the same opposition.

The Rhinos had bounced back from disappointing results in the league and the Cup – when they had lost out to St Helens – to win three consecutive games against Castleford, Salford and Halifax and in this game they made it four in a row, thanks to tries from Karl Pratt, Andy Hay, Iestyn Harris and Chev Walker who all crossed the St Helens try line once. Keith Senior also scored a brace of tries and Francis Cummins claimed a hat trick, but all the accolades were given to Tonie Carroll who scored 4 tries.

He was only the third player to do this for the Rhinos in the Super League era, Leroy Rivett had famously scored four in the Challenge Cup final in 1999 and that same year Iestyn Harris added four against Huddersfield in the league. Iestyn Harris was also superb in this game, successfully kicking 11 goals to give the side a 74-16 win.

ON THIS DAY in 2018, Leeds welcomed Warrington Wolves to Emerald Headingley and looked to be on their way to a morale boosting win against Steve Price’s side midway through the second half. However, Warrington fought back with second row Harvey Livett crossing for a hat trick for the visitors.

ON THIS DAY in 1912, Leeds and Hunslet contested the Lazenby Cup for the first time. Mr. Lazenby, a member of the Leeds Committee, presented a Silver Cup for annual competition between the two sides, the aim being to establish a fund for the provision of playing fields for teams in the Leeds and District Intermediate League. Leeds were the first to hold the Cup, defeating Hunslet at Headingley, on May 4th, by 14 points to 6.
